Hi,

Still looking into all the little things with a 300zx that could be costly. I'm now looking at security. I've discovered that the TOAD Ai606 seems to be very popular amongst you forum dwellers ;)

I want a TT SWB with a targa top, but are there any issues with security. I know the 300zx didn't come with a factory alarm so would the targa top cause any issues when it comes to having an alarm fitted?

Also, how secure are targa tops in the first place?

I reckon they're as secure as any sunroof. You can break the targa glass or you can break the side windows and then remove the targas themselves - what's the difference ?

Incidentally, I think that the US cars have locks on the targas - never seen a UK/Jap car with that.

I think the targa's are fantastic. People who don't know the car are always amazed they actually come off! Thet look part of the body so well. They lock in nice and tight and I more or less consider them as a normal roof tbh! Ok, so they are glass.....but so are the windows, so from a security point of view they don't make the car any more vulnerable imho.

Look at it this way, if someone want's to get into your car they can always stick a brick though your window, so it's not an issue for me, and when the sun's out, they rock!

So they're no less secure than a non targa model would be. But are they prone to leaking? If so wouldn't this cause the internal sensors to go off (or am I just worrying too much)?

Agree with Andy, James and Herman, they rock :D

Took the Z to work the other day, and the girls in the office wanted a look, so was showing them round and said ' The roof comes off', so I took one panel out and.....

" Wow!!!!!!! Thats cool"............... you can imagine the grin on my face :D

Oh yeah... I know your game pal! Cos thats exactly the game I [plan on playing :D

When I had my CAT 1 alarm fitted , it came with the interior 'pressure' sensor. I pointed out to the fitter that the Z had a targa roof, and he didn't fit that part of the system. If you park it with the roof off in summer he said that the alarm would go off all the time! Just a thought....

What alarm you got?

On a toad you can disable the ultrasonics, the car will still be armed on the doors;)

I have Microwave Proxsimity sensor so i can leave the roof off and still have the alarm on it will only go off if you put your hand in the car! :D:D:D

I got a Max Power MP5 :o which I believe is based on the Toad system but just re-badged. I've got the microwave sensor installed to provide some sort of interior security with the targas off, but the fitter didn't install those little things that look like microphones.

The difference between an alarm for a convertible than a simple alarm is not when the roof is closed but when is opened. Alarms for targas or convertibles have additional sensors which are trigger when something passes into their range for ex. if your roof is open and a leaf falls in the tha alarm would be trigger. These add ons dont cost mush so u can add them in a second stage.

Them micraphone looking things are for ultrasonics! if you have micrawave you dont need them!

TA! :hyper: :)

The toad has all these options on it and generally works well, though I did get a few false alarms with the targas left off last summer. Could be something 'dropping in' the open top, but I suspect that the alarm sensitivity is not that accurate. Still locks the doors and does the CAT 1 disables though, so no-one is going to steal it even with the roof off!

But they could always fill your car with cement (or worse!) if they decide they hate you cos your a poser!

Anything droping in would trigger your alarm and alarms are designed to scare people not prevent them from stealing. My advise if ur not there leave the targas closed.

Thats a charming thought

My dad had one of those microwave (ultrasonic?) alarms fitted in his old car. He ended up turning the whole system off cos during the summer fly's wandered into the car and would constantly set the alarm off.

I'd not leave the car unattended if the roof was off, too many idiots about.

After reading your posts I'm now satisfied a targa top won't be as dodgy as I initially thought. Thanks guys.
