Newly Imported TT, all help and advice please...

Ello u lot, just picked up the ZX yest and wondered if u can gimme some tips / advice on questions i have!

1. where should the boost be reading on idle ?

2. is it very smooth or should there be noticeable boost from 2nd tubbie like my rx7

3. on startup this morning not as loud from outside engine but when in car can hear very loud tappety noise and when revved it goes up a bit

4. the water temp guage is kinda messed up, on journey home it warmed up and sat about right i woulda thought but then it started going wierd! it would move as i revved the car and hwen boosting home etc.. would sit on the cold nad maybe move up a bit if i let off? but i have an aftermarket water temp too and that was sitting between 70-80 all the way no worries.

5. oil pressure aftermarket guage i have sometimes goes quite low and the red light on it comes on, normally if the car's idling about 6-700rpm and it will go down with the temp when that goes down, but when the car's running ie foot on accelorator all seems fine ?!

please help with as much as u lot can really appreciate it!

thanks alot

idle seems way low to me Matt mine is idle at 900 / 1000 rpm check the throttle position sensor , its on the right hand side of the engine as you look at it between the throttle body and the big rubber pipe ,

Stebbs

sorry to seem stupid, but once i find it what do i check it for ? do i adjust it, if so how etc ?

Matt , it can be adjusted easily ,a way to do this is to have the ignition on but the car not running and move the sensor in until a click is heard slide the sensor back a little bit and it will be about right , the voltage should be about 0.4v but i cant remember which wire to check for this , if you go to AndyP's web site on this forum im sure he will have the info you need on there, you will probably find that that is the cause of the oil light coming on at idle ,

good luck mate

Steve

adjusting the throttle position sensor will raise the tick over to the correct setting

Cool, do u have any idea on any of the other questions mate! worried about the tappety noise :(

also the tubbs are not sequential like in the RX7 they are twinned and work in unison

so the boost when its on will be fairly noticeable , make sure the front wheels are pointing straight ahead and the road isnt wet .........Zeds have been known for swopping ends very quickly with little warning and expensive consequences , i supose thats why they are classed as more of a drivers car

I personally would class the Rx7 as more of a drivers car, but.. it wasn't very practical for day to day use, this however i've already fallen in love with driving and the noise is fantastic! it does have a HUGE exhaust tho :) can see why u lot like these cars soo much!!

have u got a link for andy p's webby can't find a link for it! thanks mate

Matt

also mate, do u know where the boost guage should be reading on idle? mine reads -7

so the tubby kick in q is solved, hopefully the idling solved and that will solve oil pressue, any1 got a clue about water temp stock guage and the tappety noise please ?

Matt

The turbo gauge is showing correct. Turbos actually cause a suction when at idle.

You will not feel the 2nd turbo come on. Its not a sequential turbo. there is a turbo on each side of the V and they spin at the same time. So 1 turbo supplies boost for 3 cylinders.

gotcha ok, so that's most prob's / q's hopefully solved thank you very much you lot, now just need answers to the water temp guage (stock) and the loud tappety noise

please help guys !!

Matt

loud tappet noise, try changing your oil and put some 10-60 if you can or 15-50.

The stock temp gauge moving so quick may be due to a bad earth some where. Make sure the connection is good.

Nope, the temp needle moving up and down with accelleration/decelleration is due to the connector to the guage being loose. Open the bonnet, find the top radiator pipe and you'll see two sender units on it - one yellow (sends signal to ECU) and next to it a smaller black one (this is the sender unit for the dash guage). Pull the black one off, check for corrosion and clean if necessary and push it back on firmly. Make sure it can not wiggle around as this is what causes the dash guage to move around. Basically, when you accellerate the main fan behind the radiator spins up and causes more air to be displaces inside the engine bay. This in turn "pushes" against the sender unit which, if not attached properly, will cause the dash guage to fluctuate. It's a common problem on most 10 year+ Zeds.

Boost guage should be reading near to the left most side of the boost guage on idle (ie -7mmHG on an import and -14psi on a UK spec car).

Oil pressure: Change the oil (use a Nissan filter & sump plug and a good grade oil - I highly recommend Castrol Magnatec 10W40) and see what happens. Very often the stock oil pressure guage shows near to 0 oil pressure because the sender unit is knackered (new one from Nissan costs around £90). It is a design flaw and this problem is inherent to all Zeds. If your aftermarket oil pressure sender gets its readings from this unit then it is likely that it is also "reading" a low pressure whereas in reality the pressure is fine. If you want to resolve this problem, do an oil change (always a good idea), buy a new Nissan oil pressure sender or plumb the aftermarket guage in elsewhere.

Hope this helped.

Regards,

SRRAE, Danny, oil change.. good idea will do that.. do u know how much oil in a oil and filter change is needed?

as for temp needle, danny i will try all of that and let u know how it goes :D

thanks every1 for help i'll do oil etc.. and hope all is ok :D

god i'm starting to love this car!

Get a Nissan one ... we had this debate on this forum a few days ago so I'm not going to get into this again. Just trust me ... go for genuine Nissan as they are the correct type, cheap and easy to get hold of. Also, don't forget to get a new sump plug washer.

When I change my oil I usually fill the filter before putting it onto the car and then put roughly 3.5L into the engine. Run it and keep checking and topping up until the right level is reached. If you over fill with oil you can have all sorts of probs like dipsticks that pop out and spray oil all over the engine ...

Cheers!

anywhere i can mail order a nissan filter for the zx mate? it's not registered yet and wanna do oil quick sharp!

I can pick one up for you tomorrow morning (as I'm passing my local Nissan dealer anyway) and can post you the lot in the afternoon. E-mail me you contact details and we'll sort it out - dannyzaat@yahoo.co.uk. (or phone me on 07044016586)

Alternatively, drop by your local Nissan dealer, they will have them in stock as it is the same for several vehicles in the range.

Let me know what you want to do.

Regards,

Z centre I think

Look on the traders section, give them a call, it will take a day to arrive.

Arthur
