Car the other morning warmed up then when warm couldnt get to tick over - kept dying. Looked under bonnet and my TPS was loose - now sliding this back and forth as such changes the revs but Im sure there is a voltage on one of the wires to set it to. From what I remember someone said as a rough guide to set base you can switch ignition onand move it till you hear a click then move back slightly and tighten. Thing is I cant hear a click? I thought you had to have engine running then get .4v off one of the wires?

Also car seems slightly lumpy when driving around - could this be related?

You should be getting around 0.4V on idle, and I think it's around 4V on WOT.

Don't know which wire it is off the top of my head, do a quick search or look at AndyP's site in the links section.

sorry mate, whats WOT?

aha, But if I set it on warm tickover it should read .4v then that should be it right?

There is a little line scribed on the TPS body above the screw. That is slightly to the right off the center of the screw.

0.4V is a "ballpark" figure. The important bit of setting the TPS correctly is that on idle you want the position sensor "open". When you blip the accellerator you want the position sensor to be "closed". Setting the TPS is easiest if you have a ConZult attached because it shows you exactly what voltage the sensor is reading whilst you rotate the TPS (and you don't have to keep holding on to your multimeter probes while you work). As a general rule of thumb fix the TPS at the point where the revs (at idle) drop slightly. This indicates that the position sensor is "open". This may or may not be at exactly 0.4V and just to give you an indication this point is at 0.44V in my car and 0.38V in another car I've just set. If you then blip the throttle the position sensor should close straight away.

So as you can see 0.4V is a ballpark figure and it is the "range" of the TPS sensor which is important to the ECU. On my car the TPS is set at 0.44V at idle and it reads 3.86V at WOT.

Incedentally the marking on the TPS just above the screw is an indicator only and can be used as a point of reference when setting the TPS.

Hope this helped.

Cheers

Ive set it for now by listening to tickover and setting tickover at 800rpm when warm.

Can this do any damage?

Cheers

Danny thats spot on for the way to set the TPS up. Too many people rely on the around .44v setting but this can be way out of adjustment on some cars.

Danny - which wire should read .4vish

How do I see if its open or closed? when I blip throttle?

  • Author

revs drop the more I pull back to radiator, and rise more I push back to car.

Im not sure if its open but like I said I have just done it so tickover sits at 800rpm

DO NOT adjust the revs using the TPS - you'll get it all wrong - get the TPS adjusted then reset the system by disconnecting the battery for 30 mins - the car will then relearn how to drive it - the idle revs shouldnt need adjusting unless someone else has played with it.

When you are adjusting it with the ignition on but the engine off - you can check to see how accurate you have got the setting by watching the voltage change as you move the accelerator cable by hand. It will be obvious to see the change in the reading.
