I currently own a 1989 300 TT, imported in 2001 but presumably it was one of the first on the road - any idea?

Anyway, I am looking at getting a couple of things done to the engine, mainly the valve stem oil seals need replaced as I'm blowing a little smoke on idle. Also I am thinking of turning the boost up to 1 bar and believe the standard turbos have ceramic spindles and therefore can't take prolonged use at high pressure.

I am looking to get a minor rebuild with the potential of replacing both turbos whilst I am at it with the steel spindled versions.

Can anybody point me in the right direction of a good garage in Central Scotland who can be trusted to take this on without ripping me off!?

Not sure how you can diagnose valve stem oil seals with engine known for more likely blowing turbo seals when given the gun a bit too often. Your smoke on idle is more likely to be down to turbo seals. Fixing turbos or valve stem oil seals is still a big job and engine out normally either way. Where are you? There is a garage in Bonnybridge with some experience on zeds.

BTW turbos dont have ceramic spindles. Think you are thinking about another car with ceramic turbine parts. Also even though a stock zed turbo can be upped to about 1 bar it is about all it can take and dont expect it to last very long with that kind of loading used regularly. It also then needs a remapped chip to fuel properly and boost jets or a controller. Similarly with your transmission. Plenty to search for on here for more info.

Thanks Willie

An additive was introduced to the oil at last service to soften up the seals again and this seemed to work. Although it is now starting to blow a little again but only at idle, there is no smoke on overrun or gear change at any speed.

My friend is a mechanic, but not up for this job, and he had a good look around and thought the turbos looked ok - no visible signs of oil or sweating.

What is the name of the garage in Bonnybridge and I can get it over to them for a shufty.

Thanks again.

when valve stem oil seals go you get loads of smoke on the overrun NOT at idle

try this leave car ticking over till it smokes then rev it up to around 2500-3000rpm till smoke clears then let it come back to tickover if you have no smoke then its the turbo's

also try this leave car ticking over till it starts smoking loads then switch off remove the plugs if the plugs are fouled up with oil then the problem is the engine if there cleans white/grey take off the downpipes if they have oil in them or wet then it's the turbo's

try these first saves a lot of money

Thanks to both of you.

Based on your first trial above it it looks like it is the turbos! Damn!
