Evening all!

Glad to see you had a good time at TRAX, despite some efforts of the Supra's and Lotus Carlton ... Never mind, more important you enjoyed it.

I've managed to find a couple of Shell petrol stations selling the new Optimax fuel (supposedly 99 Octane) and must say that I'm cautiously impressed with the stuff - car seems slightly smoother, especially at speeds. Anyway, that's not what I'm after at the moment.

I'm still having slight problems with occasional detonation. It comes and goes but typically is audible at 40mph and very light accelleration or between 75-85mph (any faster than that and the road noise overpowers the engine noise). I'm thinking that it is a timing problem. I had the cambelt changed about 2k miles ago and the problem seems to have started after that. I called Polesworth Nissan to ask how long they need to do a check on the timing and was told that their Consult equipment doesn't interface correctly with my "import" vehicle. Not sure if this is possible but let it be. If they are to do it manually they want the car for at least an hour and will charge me £45 + VAT(!) for the privilege!

Does anyone around Birmingham or Nottingham have the expertise and equipment to test my timing? All I really want is to know if it is correct or not. By the way, what is the correct timing for a 90 Jap import TT?

As always, grateful for your replies.

Good night,

Danny

Danny,

As far as the Consult not working - they are talking out of their ar5es.. Nothing new there then from a Nelson Mandela

Timing - all you need is a timing light, and to hook it up (strange procedure, but it's in the manual), and read the marks on the crank pulley..

Standard timing is, IIRC, 15deg BTDC on a TT.

They took on the work on the jap import, so that have to finish it just like any other car... and it's the bloody same when it comes to what they did... that sort or thing really annoys me...

I remember getting charged more beacuse I had a no standard nissan exhaust to be removed once.... ahhhh... it fit better than the stock one.. how cheeky....

Thanks Az - those specs help. I'm going to find someone who has the equipment and do it myself - screw Nelson! As for the Consult, I pretty much thought they were speaking out of the wrong orifice ...

Thanks guys!

Cheers,

Danny

Bloody hell Dan, they really have been taking the piss outta you mate! Bleedin' Polecat Nelson tosserZ!!!

Not sure but I think Techtom shows the timing, no peeps in your area that have got one though! I should start carrying mine around with me for emergency diag. purposes. Especially as I drive through Brum twice a week, I could've met up with you somewhere and plugged in to see what the score is!

Can't we all get together and sign a letter of grievance against all things Nelson and send it to the head cheese in Tokyo? I know that the Toyota fraternity with the Mk III Supra's did this in the States over the head gaskett problems.

Nelson shouldn't be allowed to get away with this sort of thing! It's a basic Consumer Right that they are breaking everytime they f**k something up on your car, but they still take the green of you though don't they??? WankerZ!

IMHO

:-(

Tim - the Techtom only shows what timing the ECU sees - not what is actually set at the crank by moving the CAS... That's why the CAS is moveable..

(So your Techtom might show 15deg BTDC, but at the crank it might be moved so far round you're running 30deg BTDC say.. The ECU wouldn't know any different..)

To be pedantic, the Techtom shows two things wrt ignition timing. 1) What it thinks the timing is set to and 2) how much the ignigtion map changes that figure.

So you can see it change with throtte position, engine load, speed etc. etc., in real time.
