I was about to get in my car and I dropped the key, it landed on my foot and bounced down a drain.

I've got the spare key so I can drive it but the key that went down was the nicely shaped '300ZX' one which I really liked.

Does anyone know if you can get replacements like the nice '300zx' one?

If so, I can stop fishing down the drain with a magnet on a piece of string.

As Victor Meldrew would say.. "I don't believe it!"

Anyone know if I can get a replacement 'nice' key?

Nice one; thanks guys.

I'm outa the drain now; it was about 5ft deep and full of stinking leaves and even with a loads of excellent magnets I couldn't get it. I'll forget it and try and get one from one of those places.

I just couldn't believe my cnuting luck as it bounced off my shoe and went down!

a few years ago i dropped a set of keys down a drain in a car park at a friends house. We spend about 2 hours with clothes hangers fishing around until we realised that the drain cover was hinged and the water only 6 inches deep - at which point we just picked up the keys and felt really stupid

- check this option first.

let me know if it works.

regards,

alex

bad luck on dropping the keys. But if the key was the all metal one, then it is made fron titanium and is not magnetic so no joy with a magnet.

they are on ebay theres usually loads ov em if you search 300zx parts.

if its a gully grate at the side of the road they are about 1.2m deep...get a shovel and shovel it out yr lazy poof ;) and the gully grate is hinged you can usually see it if you look, you can also use the shovel to open the thing. Just in case you didnt bring your marigolds ;) :D

If it is full of leaves, it wont have gone down that far! Just remember when you are shoveling, to point the shovel face to the kerb, otherwise your key might go down the actual drainage channel about 400mm from the top.

I lifted the grate (it had been tarmaced down but a pole levered it open).

The water was about a foot deep and there was about two feet of rotting leaves below that. I poked the rotting leaves and loads of gas bubbled up.

I stuck my hand in but couldn't bring myself to rummage through it all. I made a magnetic 'boom' with magnets from a motorbike tank bag which are f.strong. But that didn't fetch it out.

So I think I'll leave it and get another of e-bay or somewhere.

Thanks for the advice though!

no probs...you could always go to a garden centre and get something like this...

http://www.drivall.com/fencingtools/valuepostholedigger.htm

as you open up the handles, the bottom closes, and you can lift stuff out, maybe cheaper than a key form ebay...and you can open up a sideline of digging post holes for people?

Marigolds optional ;) heheh, know what you mean though, it aint so nice.

When i dropped mine down once on the way back from school, my mum phoned whoever looks after drains and stuff, and within the hour they were here and had em out!

If its the original zed metal key its made of titanium which is not magnetic. In fact you cant get them any more and when you could they cost $100 or so. Think you better have another fish for it!

I got it back!

My work building maintenance man emptied out the drain and found it.

I guess I owe him some beers.

I was having a nightmare as the spare didn't work that well and I had two copies made which didn't work at all.

It must be titanium of something as it's not magnetic.

Many thanks for the advice gents.

Yes it is Titanium, so is not magnetic. I had the same trouble getting a copy cut from my original, I had to go back to the key cutters 3 times and they eventually cut one that kind of works. It's works in the ignition ok but when used in the door it is verfy stiff (OOooeerrrrr).

Maybe it is just a worn lock barrell?.

My story was in past tense, years before getting the Z.

On the other hand i got her when 19, o the joys of living at home with no bills yet having a full time job.

Sorry mate.. I realised that must be what you meant after posting.

In a similar 'living at home' situation I had a GSX-R1100 when I was 18.

I tried getting keys cut at a local key cutter and it's exactly the same. I've had two now and both were stiff in the door and didn't work the igniton at all.

Glad I got the titanium one back as it's smooth everywhere (!)
