So I did.

It was a 'G' plate import, going for the princely sum of £3795

Anyway, I got there, and well, was dissapointed.

The rear hatch had been resprayed, poorly, could see run underneath some cracks.

The spoiler had been painted, and was cracked to bits.

Still, all trivial.

We got to mileage, he says it only has 55k km's on it. Great I thought, till I looked inside, the leather was in real bad condition, I mean real bad. My probe has done 115k miles and the leather is only worn in one place and it is by no means bad. The leather was ripped in many places, and really crumpled.

I ask if the miles are genuine, he says "yeah I see your point, Im not sure to be honest".

So I drove it, and I loved it. Fortunately no snow down here yet, so I gave it a booting and it was lovely.

Anyway, no real question, just quite shocked that this guy wanted 4k for it... I mean, it wasnt in good condition, and OK its a twin turbo, but really, 4k for a 14 year old car? am I wrong to expect it to be in near mint condition for that money?

*shrug* :)

I'd keep looking personally.

I bought the first S13 I saw, not the wisest of moves it has to be said.

Offer him £3K - It will cost around £500 for new leather and £200 for a hatch respray (at a guess). Or just walk away. There are quite a few for sale at the moment some off forum members which look quite tasty, £4K would also buy you one from a garage with warranty and some buyer protection (try autotrader).

Buy mine! :hyper:

You should expect the car to be pretty clean over £4k I reckon, below that, then there's the reason its lower, hence he might not drop his price as its valued at what its worth.

Buy mine! :hyper:

Yep H15, :nono: got to agree they all said dont buy the first one you see :nono: That one i posted about was a right shed and how they had the b*ll*cks to ask £9999 for it i dont know....:xxx:'s and i drove 200+ round trip to go see it too :slap:

But you got to look see haven't ya...... :hyper:

go and see as many cars as you can mate .... I saw about 12 different Zeds before I bought mine and the more I viewed the more I learnt about what to look for in a good Z ...

Don't rush into anything

TBH .. I would have walked away from the one you described ... There are plenty out there.

Oh I wont be buying it, the mileage discrepancy put me off quite a bit.

I really only went to look simply because I havnt driven one before, and it seemed a bit silly me saying that I wanted one when I hadnt driven one. Anyway, the drive was fine, a 300zx is definately for me :)

I'll probably look at a few dozen more, and kick myself over a few of them too. Still, you can never look at too many of these beautys!

I looked at about a dozen before buying. The very first one I saw was the most expensive and the best and I missed it by an hour. Ended up with second best, but still better than most I've ever seen and saved a grand. That was three years ago and I paid £9000 in 2000 for a 95 and ten times that since.

I looked at 2 :D:D:D And bought the second one - what a fool :p ;)

Nah mate, there was only one. You were just pissed that's all!

I bought the 2nd one I saw - only because it was in perfect condition and it was from a dealer with a 6th month warranty. But H15 look carefully and learn more along the way.

Geoff.

I bought the second one I drove! I didnt know alot about them!!

2 & a half years on still dont!!

@tanzx

And very nice it looks too :)

Just been reading a couple of buyers guides, think im gonna go armed with a checklist for the next lot!

Check out as many cars as you can. I looked at loads at dealers, then bought mine off of a forum member. It had all the history since it came into this country and had been well looked after. Absolute bargin it was. :) Plus if you buy one off of here, you can do a search and see what kind of problems the cars had in the past.

Hi Hi5

Don't buy it!! as everyone says, check out a few first.

Now I don't want to start a "UK v import" debate here

(because in general, imports do have lower miles no rust etc - I said IN GENERAL, anyway I have a UK car with low miles & no rust :D ) but there are way too many dodgy import dealers around now. A few years ago 99% of fresh imports were good, genuine cars. Now everyone and his dog are importing from Japan and they don't care what cr@p they bring over. They just clock it and flog it (see how many imports for sale have 54000 miles ;) )

Hence the condition of the one you looked at. Also bear in mind that leather doesn't always last in the Japanese climate, so most imports have cloth.

If you buy an import I strongly suggest you get one that has been over here a while - one of the 99% good ones I refer to above. Better still, buy from a forum member as it would have been looked after properly too. Spend as much as you can afford on a good one, rather than skimp and buy a cheap one which will cost you very dear in repairs.

Good hunting

Richard ;)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

What about this,Black G reg,£12,650 http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/cars_search.asp?modelexact=1&make=NISSAN&model=300+ZX&min_pr=9000&max_pr=15000&postcode=nn11+4ll&miles=1500&max_records=200&source=0&sort=3&search=SEARCH

Year older than mine, simler spec,my engine around 50k,maybe i should put it up for £10,000 ;)

Have noticed that modified Z prices are high at the moment, and looking around the net prices in genral for what i would deem good 300s are on the up,could be all the press/mag stuff of late pushing em up,what with the renewd interest in the 350Z,(especially as we now no that the 350 is slower :D )could be that the 300zx is turning into a classic in its own right at last.

Personaly i would stay away from the one you saw Hi5,spend a little more, say £5000,take a good look at a load more too.

Tony

Sorry to dissapoint, but I cant actually buy for approx 8-12 weeks, If your Z is still on he market at that time Deano, I will definately have to consider yours, it does look very clean and tidy, and the few subtle mods do make it appealing :)

It's looking as though an import car wont cost as much on insurance as I first thought, so really any Z is a consideration :)

Grrr, just gotta wait now :(

when i bought my z i new absolutely nothing about them it was the first 1 i viewed and it was at nite to never thought at the time seen it and thought ive just got to have that pretty stupid i suppose luckily the engine is good

and runs very well the body needed tidied a little bit but apart from that the

cars great love it its the best car ive ever had.

Tony,

If my memory serves me correct the one on the autotrader page you have put a link to has the 300zx with the skyline gtr engine in for £10k now thats a bargain and when it came into this country it was up for £20k!!

Nice to see that some of the more modded ones are going for decent money

HI5

I really need to sell her before then as I am getting married in May and the ZX is unfortunately the casualty of this  . The end of March would have to be my absolute deadline for selling her.

Cheers,
