As my driving is abominable, I have been thinking of going on one of those track day/ race driving type courses (where you get to drive someone elses nice car, instead of pranging your own).

Has anyone tried one? or are you all track-day heroes and need no tuition. Are they any good? and do I want to steer clear of the Red letter Day kind - 'drive a ferarri for the day'?

My driving really is appalling and I do need to be told how to drive the thing properly.

Would help saying where you are in the country ;)

I dont think these track days will make you a better driver, just give you tips on how to drive round a track.

I don't really mind how far away it is- any excuse to get away from her :)

Ok, I'm not that TOTALLY dreadful. Just careless, and I can drive (ish). What I mean is, I'm looking for practical tips on how to drive a 'fast'(er) car round a track- using the gears right, cornering properly etc. You know? I'm not REALLY suggesting I am not fit to be on the road. Just not driven on a track. ever.

and I don't normally go at it like a prat on the open road.

Jonathan Palmer at Bruntingthorpe should be right up your street. Had loads of fun their in a VR6 and Ford single seaters. There is no Armoc so if you run out of grip/track you don't incur large bills.

I thought the JP days were seriously expensive... am I wrong?

I want to do this as well Rich - but previous car died before it got to the point I felt comfortable abusing it on a track. Maybe this time around. :

There is also a track day in Hull in March which includes tuition if you want it I think - look in Events!

JP is not epxensive if you've got ten+ mates - club driven maybe?

What do you want to do? Learn to be a better driver or learn to drive a circuit? I ask because I've heard details of a company that takes you out on the road in your own car and gives on-road tuition - http://www.ridedrive.co.uk/

As for the track day tuition - EVO mag are running introductory Track days at the moment with tuition (£70 Half day), debrief and reviews of your driving. In fact the wife was meant to be on one yesterday at Brands but unfortunately snow stopped play, so it's been rescheduled for next week now.

There are loads of these and it's just a qiestion of asking at the centre as to what they try to cover etc. Obviously, if you're paying for a one on one session it can be tailored to your needs, but it's true that a good track driver can teach you about good lines and braking, turn in, power on points etc and this is all good for use on the OPEN road - not much help on the shopping trip though!

I've been on a couple of these as presants from my good lady. To be honest you'll learn more track craft going Karting at any of the out door circuits that run the 400 or 320 pro karts. The Rally craft days though are sh1t hot they run one a Market Drayton. I told them I wasn't interested in the 4x4 scoobies etc the second time I went and spent more time in the old RS escort RWD. Top notch power sliding throw the log yard. I like it that mutch I'll be going again soon
