Hi,

I finaly picked up my first ever Zed on Saturday and I love it. It goes like poo off a shovel!

I have one thing annoying me though and that is this wurring (if that is how you spell it!) sound. It is not very apparent when going slow or when you really put your foot down but for normal driving it is getting on my nerves.

My mate who was with me reckons it is worn wheel bearings.

Could it be anything else?

Justin

a whirring noise from behind you when pulling off from a junction etc?? if so then its the fuel pump.

 girlfriends vibrator in the glove box?

LOL :D :D

Cheers for the reply scoops but I don't really notice it when I pull away, it seems to be worst at normal cruising speeds. It does seem to be coming from behind though.

ok its a different kind of whir then :p

could be wheel bearings, or maybe the diff?

or tyres - zeds are known for tyre roar on our rough roads - does it change pitch with different surfaces? Maybe also if you have Japanese spec compound tyres instead of Euro spec.

I do have really fat tyres on mine they are 245/40/18 on the front and 275/35/18 on the rears. They are Dunlop sports. Maybe this could be the problem then. My tracking is also out at the front very slightly. Could this be a cause? If so to get it put right will I have to track all 4 wheels?

Cheers

Generally, if its the front wheel bearings, as you turn left or right, this ease's the presure on the outside wheel. If its the bearing, the lower presure/weight can make the noise stop or reduce in amount. This can help.

Thanks Mark,

I will be out hunting for fast sweeping corners today then! :D

I have just taken my car down to my mechanic and he reckons it is the rear wheel bearings as he cannot feel too much in the way of play on the diff although it is very crowded under there so is difficult to really tell for sure.

I do still have vibration through my seat though. Would badly worn rear wheel bearings cause vibration here or is the diff bearing the only thing that causes this?

I've just replaced my near side rear wheel bearings and noticed a definate improvement in vibration. Previously I had changed the rear gearbox mount but this hadn't made much difference.

...tell me about the vibration in your NA - My NA is suffering, so I propped up the relatively new gearbox mount the other night but still no improvement. I've had the rear wheels balanced so I doubt that it's that. Never thought to check the wheel bearings. It's only really noticeable from 70 upwards, so it's speed related.

...let me know what you think.

many thanks

There is also the prop centre support bearing to consider. By 10 years old the rubber bellows support for the bearing is harder than a witches mammary and beginning to perish and break up. On mine it had sagged so that the bearing was sat on the mount support instead of cushioned in the centre. The bearing itself was sound. Symptom was vibrating felt thru the seat worst around 30 - 55 and it improves as the car warms up with some heat in the rubber. Cost around £130 for the part and up to 3 hours to change it.

David,

I think I might well start with the rear wheel bearings as my mechanic definetlt thought the rear bearings were knackered. Might be a good thing to do before I start messing about with bearings elsewhere.

Just to give me some kind of idea could you please tell me how much the rear bearings were each and if they are easily fitted?

Thanks,

Justin

I had one done on mine recently - £90 and I think about an hour to do but it was lost in the depths of the bill.

Barry, was that £90 each or for both rears wheels?

Sorry - £90 a corner I only needed one.

 £90 a corner!

I thought bearings were a cheap thing to do. I think I better try and get a definete idea of what is wrong with my car before I go taking shots in the dark and replacing everything.

Cheers,

...tell me about the vibration in your NA

OK,

Think my car is/has been suffering from several causes. The most noticable problem I had was a really bad shudder when pulling away when cold. This seemed to ease when it got warmed up. Thats what prompted me to start looking up threads on vibration problems. I was told when I bought the car that the drive shaft bearing had been done (although I have no documentary evidence to back this up) The obvious thing to try next was the rear gear box mount. Did this and it maded no difference to the shudder.

The other symptom I have have is a vibration I can feel through the seat as I pass through the 2-3k rev range. I think this eased a bit when I did the gear box mount but has gone completely now with the new wheel bearing. Didn't do the bearing because I was concerned about vibration, did it as I was terrified the wheel was going to come off. It was truely knackered, wobbling all over the place.

Think my shudder problem is more engine related. I haven't got rid of it completely, but cleaning PTU, tmpe sensor & TPS contacts seems to have made a hell of a difference. Read one post suggesting sticky lifter causing this sort of problem when cold.

Jack, from what I read think your symptoms sound a bit more like the drive shaft centre bearing mount thing...

BarryD, 90 quid sounds pretty damn good to me!! Wish I'd looked into it a bit more. I got the wheel bearing assemble and a new drive hub from MJP. Came to a bit more than that!! Guess you must have had new bearings put into the existing assembly.

David

David - no idea mate, it was an MOT failure point and showed up on the invoice as "Wheel Bearing £95" (sorry not £90) the labout cost was lost in the replacement of the cam belts and water pump.

Update,

I have been told I have had a recent gearbox mount. I guess this could mean that the prop could have been sagging. Might reinforce the argument for it being the prop bearing maybe?

  • 1 month later...

Where are you guys getting your REAR wheel bearings from???

Rear wheel bearings are £129 each!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not fitted!!!

Front are around £70 Fitted

I have also a noise problem Not prop (no vibes) seems to come from the front Had front wheel bearing replaced no joy.Might try the other before the rear ones

Am totally confused about this noise------------Like a mechanical resonance definately bearing like; Not exhaust. The car runs beautifully, everything as it should be,enginewise that is.Oh yea and the noise only starts after around 38mph!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!does not get any louder or faster with speed!!!

Any comments would be greately appreciated
