HELP...........PLEASE

I was driving home in my 1992 Nissan ZX TT auto (UK Car) and went to drive uphill onto a sliproad. Suddenly the ABS and HICAS lights came on and the steering became very heavy. I pulled over and tried to re-set the "fault" by switching off the ignition and attempted to re-start the car. This I could not do and my car had to be towed back to my house. The AA engineer thought it was my alarm/ immobiliser but this was checked and found to be working correctly. Other people have said it may be the auto transmission inhibitor switch, the speed sensor, the started motor. All very good suggestions but where do I start. My car is currently of the road and if there any good mechanics in the Leicestershire area who think they can fix this problem, do let me know and I will be eternally grateful....Here's hoping!!

where in leicestershire?

Agree with Paul on this - you need to be checking whether there's a spark or not.

where in leicestershire?

I am in Thurcaston, near Rothley. If you can help me I will give you my mobile number. I really need this car back on the road.

Thanks in anticipation.

Do you also know what Paul C means by the PTU cutting out? Sorry i'm no mechanic...Thanks

sounds like the good old PTU cutting out

What exactly is the PTU? How do I prevent it from cutting out or repair/ replace the suspect part? How does the PTU prevent the car from starting. Sorry, but i'm no expert on these things...Thanks in anticipation

the PTU is the Power Transistor Unit, AKA an ignition module/amplifier.

they are a common fault on older zeds, located on the front of the drivers side cam belt cover.

1st check & clean the connectors, otherwise it could be a broken connector inside, it is possible to repair by cutting the unit open & soldering - but i only done it as a tempary measure till my new one got here from Courtesy. probably would still be working now tho! ;)

easy to swap, so might be worth seeing if someone local can oblige :)

I eventually found the fault. I was able to get underneath and short out the starter motor and the car was able to turn-over. I knew the problem had to be somewhere between the fuse box and starter motor. It now appears that the 3rd tier of fuses (ABS, HICAS etc) under the dash have no power going to them whatsoever, therefore I need to get behind the fuse box to determine whether or not there is a wire off completely, a fractured connection or if there is a relay that powers that particular tier of fuses, has failed. Still more to do!!

I traced the fault to a relay, which does indeed power the tier of fuses affected (amongst other things). After I sourced a new relay and re-fitted the fuse box, etc, the car is now starting and operational again.

HURRAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Huge thanks to all who helped and gave some good advice/ suggestions, particularly MICKEYB.

Cheers :hyper:
