Which is quicker manual or auto......

Best off doing a search, you've been around long enough to know the sort of debate this sparks.

and noone on the forum as far as i know have put a stock manual against a stock auto on a stand still start with drivers of similar expertise, and presented video evidence, with a certificate signed by her magesty the queen in a velvet box with a pretty bow

this is what it will take for one side to back down in the debate.

this is what it will take for the manual driver to back down in the debate.

Chris - blue is for Fords :p :xxx:

Pete :x: :D

I know johnboy has had both & he said the manual is deffo faster ;)

Auto without a doubt - who needs this changing gear stuff unless you are trying to extract every last ounce / newton of effort from the engine. Big engine (of which you must agree three litres is large) suit auto boxes to get the best daily perofrmance out of them.

Downside - saps power with 280/300HP ish on tap who cares; can catch you unaware when they kickdown in a corner (doh don't floor it in a corner)

Downside -

they break into tiny pieces unless you fit a big oil cooler & even then they might break unless you have the fast road box upgrade & even then they might break unless you convert to a manual!! :p

Pete if i could sell mine today i'd buy yours tomorrow unfortunately no luck yet....

Are they 3 or 4 speed and do they all have overdrive and does overdrive work in all gears???????and and and and

 The auto boys and girls will tell you that auto's are faster. However, what I will say to you is, if you ever decide to go for a Skyline GTR Vspec, you try and find an auto.

LOL Alex :D - here's my reply to you on the same question ;) from my for sale thread:

The autobox has 4 gears plus overdrive - the techies will tell you exactly how many ratios there are, somethig like 8, or do a search

The switches:

Rocker switch - Power/Normal/Hold

Power tells the box to shift later, and does not change back up as willingly, ready for the next acceleration "Power" is activated automatically when you stab the throttle, or push all the way down.

Normal is the usual setting

Hold is for winter driving, pulls away in 2nd gear and changes up to higher gears sooner.

On the shifter there is an overdrive switch, this is "on" normally, when "off" the revs rise about 2,000rpm and the car becomes more responsive - like sitting at higher revs in a manual I guess.

There are dashboard lights telling you if you have Power or Hold on, or Overdrive off.

1 and 2 can be selected manually, I tend to use 1 when I need the engine braking eg in traffic, so you dont have to keep stabbing the brakes. Other than that I dont really use them.

The thrill of a kick down from 4 - 2 or 3 - 1 is awesome - something manuals dont really have, as the gearchange is sudden and really boots you in the back, power delivery is then smooth up through the gears, you really cant feel it changing, other than the engine note.

If you want to come and have spin and a look drop me a PM, also I'll be at Thor on the RR day on Saturday, and Santa Pod on Sunday if you wanna meet up? The car doesnt usually get this sort use lol

Cheers

Pete

;)

Not like manual clutches then? :p Autoboxes can take more BHP than manuals through them

why do they always break then :slap:

when was the last time you saw a post about a manual gearbox failure??

the clutches wear out & are cheap & easy to replace! how much is a autobox rebuild again?? :p

LMAO - here we go!

Pete to be honest my last car was a 928 Porsche 4.7 litre and i loved kicking down from 3rd to second at 70 it flew and i did get that kick back in the seat.

It's because i hate traffic i bought an auto Porsche the only problem was it ran very hot!!!!!!

4 speed sounds good and i agree an auto changing is much smoother than a manual.

Ok worst case how much would Jeff charge for a gearbox re-build????????????

Mines auto - no complaints with the extra power on modding. On motorways brilliant with kickdown etc., in traffic easier!!! Additionally you can sit back more comfortably without having to sit in aposition for foot work.

Geoff.

Currently have a manual and auto

Auto seems quicker when driving normally as when you floor it the powers always there.

How many times have you dropped to first gear on a manual at 30 mph ?? Dosent happen.

Does on an auto though.

In the end it down to personel preference, manual more of a drivers car, but I still seem to prefer the auto for power slides and town driving.

Slushbox. :D

Did someone say it was cheap to change the clutch!!! Cheap compared to what, just had mine done and the cheapest I found was £400 all in. I had an escort and that cost £120 all in, now that's cheap.. And on the related subject it has to be manual, never seen an auto Ferrari, Lambourghini, Paganni Zonda!!!

Just 4 gears to be exact or 3 plus overdrive plus a lock up clutch that makes it feel like it just went into 5th but its the difference between the torque converter slip and no slip.

The lock up works in 3rd as well but to be honest I have never been able to feel it in 3rd tho 3rd is great for a blast round country roads with all that torque. 3rd in an auto is the same ratio as a manual in 4th.
