Set New Tyres(please suggestions needed quick)!

Hi,

I just failed my MOT for:

* Excessive Play near side rear wheel bering

* near side rear tyre below limit

Now, tyres I'm not bothered because I had average ones and I wanted to get 4 new tyres anyway....

Co-op Nissan wants £199,16 inc VAT and inc Fitting for the BEARING.....this looked to me like an ok price...so I said ok....(was it ok?)

About TYRES!!!!!

I decided to buy 4 new tyres....

what are the best ones (without going silly in prices) to get?...

From some old post I understand that you all love the

Bridgestone Potenza S02...(is it the right name?)

NOTE: my car is UK stock standard..is 4 tyre 245 all around a good solution?...next month or so I'll be goin up to around 350BHP and hopefully get racelogic traction control as well...S02/245 all around a good solution?

What is the right price I should pay for one tyre?

and how much for a set of 4?

Please help me out if you can because I need to sort this out quickly.....

Thanks

bridgestone so2 yup thats the one, the bearing i dont know

First - you sure it was the bearing? If you were getting the MOT done at the Nissan place then it probably was..

But, to an untrained eye, wobbling the rear wheel, Hicas control arm and bearing would have very similar symptoms..

I just had a set of Bridgestone S-03's fitted for £588 for four (that included a £50 alignment setup however) all in.. £135 a corner was the price of the tyres (fitted)..

For a UK car, it should be (correct me if I'm wrong here anyone) 225/50R16 for the fronts, and 245/45R16 on the rears (UK spec alloys are 6.5J front and 7.5J rear I believe). I had 225/50 all round (jap spec wheels, 6.5J all four).

Hi...

yes I see what you say about the wobbling...damn things....mmm

Yes I think the s02 are no more around...(well out of production at least) and the s03 are supposed to last longer...with some opinion being that s02 were slightly better...but I guess s03 will be fine for me....yes the uk speck is 225 front and 245 rear, but if the wheels are all the same (all 4 of them)...then I could actually go for 4 245 tyres....which should be fine on 4 16' wheels...

when you upgrade to 17 or 18' wheels...is that just an estetic thingy...or you do need bigger wheels when maybe you increase bhp power?....

I post here the price I can get on tyres today....

Thanks

Hi there,

As for your tyres, go for Bridgestone Potenza S-O3's all round - can't get any better than that for both dry and wet handling (plus a nice tread pattern to boot!) S-O2's are v. difficult to find because they are officially no longer produced (S-O3's are the replacements). If you have a UK spec Zed then you "should" have 225/50Z16 at the front corners and 245/45Z16 at the back. I got my tyres from MichelDever tyres (don't have the number at hand but do a search and you should find it) and they delivered it to my door within 24hrs for a reasonable £116 (front) and £122 (rear), p&p £15. Fitting them cost me £15 a corner.

Cheers!

Danny

As Danny says, if you have UK spec wheels, your wheels are *not* the same size all round.

UK fronts are 16" dia, 6.5J width

UK rears are 16" dia, 7.5J width

If you check the codes on the tyres you should find (I think) that they are different front to back (and left to Right..) From memory, UK ones are;

43P05 and 43P00 (fronts)

43P15 and 43P10 (rears)

Jap spec are 05 and 00 all round

but what happens then if I fit 4 245 all around?

any problem with handluing or something like it?

or could it be that 245 and 225 solution is just nissan saving money?...

Also the 50 or 45 Z16...whta is Z for?...the guy from nissan said I have to specify

V-Rated when I ask for a quote.....unless he got this Vrated from my previouse tyres.....is V-Rated right for a uk stock car 16' wheels?....mmmm.....I'd like to get 4 245, but only if that is safe....I guess there is just more grip....but then again i'm a novice here!!!

245/45's simply wont sit properly on the front rims, since the front rims are somewhat narrower. IMHO this will reduce in much increased understeer because the front tyres will tend to "balloon" on the wheel.

225/50 front and 245/45 rear is standard for UK cars. Not money saving - simply the correct size for the wheel.

Z and V are speed ratings. Z is higher than V (further down the alphabet!).. i forget the figures now, I think V is probably 150mph, and Z 180mph.. Something like that..

I see....so in his case I'll have to see which letter is the right one for my uk stock car. 16'...Z or V....for some reason I don't trust what the guy said about V tyre...I think he read it fromt my old tyre (the 4 245 average ones)....I'll check the online manual....and see if it is there...but if you know the correct values...please post them

BTW...the best quote I had so far is:

£554 including VAT/Fitting/Allignement

for 4 S03 (all 4 245)...

so if i go 245 and 225 am I save some more penny....

this quote was from Ford-RapidFit in Derby.

Personally I'd go for Z - simply a higher rating, meaning if you do drive at high speed for long periods, the tyre compound won't break down..

BTW - one thought - you may have four rear wheels on your car, that's quite common in the states certainly.. Check the codes on the wheel to see if they are all 43P1x or not. If they are, then they are all 7.5J wide, and 245's are indeed the correct tyre for all four wheels..

------------------

Az

ops this then forces me to abuse your patience and ask you 2 more questions...

1) is the value of the wheel visible on the outside?...

2) if I do have 4 rear wheels....is that safe?

Yep - the size & rating of the tyre will be written on the tyre wall..

And the part number of the wheel itself will be stamped onto the rim - actually if I remember, it'll be "inside" one of the hole parts, on the little lip that's in there..

Four rear *wheels* is fine yeah, so long as they have the correct (245/45) tyres on. In fact, you'll get less understeer (and more tendency to oversteer) because of the increased grip on the front, at the expense of slightly less steering feel..

Az

Thank you very much for your help...I'll check those value later this evening...

Good stuff m8

May the grip with you!

Lol..

No problem m8.. any more Q's.. just post..

Just got 2 so3's for £104 a piece all fitted from motorway. Pays to shop around cos 50 yards from their place someone else was quoting £165. My tyres are 205's though on a jap.

Ive decided to try Goodyear Eagle F1's.

Are they ok on the Zed, I know S03's seem the choice.

Glenn

From what I've heard, they're OK, but not as sticky as Bridgestones.. So basically, they'll probably last longer..

Should be fine though, haven't heard of any problems thats for sure..

FINALLY here my REAL setting smile.gif

Ok first of all for some reason I thought I had 4x245.....but no...I do have 245 rear and 225 front....What a mess I'm...it must be the hard work...(Nico knows!)

Anyway here is what I got as tyres and wheels!!

^^^

Ju L 40P05_____FRONT____40 P00 R Ju

| 245/45 R16 94V |

Ju L 40P15_____REAR______40P10 R Ju

Ok so...with this rims-wheels....I guess i HAVE to fit 225 fron and 245 back...But on these wheels can I fit Z-rating instead V-rateing (Speed Tyres) all around?

And why my

front-left-wheel is P05

front-right-wheel is P00

rear-left-wheel is p15

rear-right-wheel is P10...

all 4 different?....mmm...

So I should buy S03 Z-rated...225/50 front

and 245/45 back....

On my current tyres, the front ones have 92V and the back ones 94V...what's that?..

there you go...but after these i should be ok with ordering the dmn things smile.gif

Thanks

Here's a few answers for you smile.gif

Your wheel setup is right at the moment. The reason all four codes are different is because the 300ZX alloys are 'sided' - you have Left alloys and Right alloys (designated by the 0 or 5 on the end of the code) as well as front and back (designated by the 0x or 1x in the code)..

Z rateds will fit fine, the only difference the speed rating makes is to the temperature/speed handling ability of the tyre, not the fit..

I forget what the numbers in front of the V mean - they make a difference to the speed rating, but I can't remember what.. Sorry.. frown.gif

OK...

so i'll order

S03

225/50/Z 16 (ZR maybe will say)Front

245/45/Z16 Rear

And that should sort me out...

Thanks!!!

The best I could find...

C0-OP Nissan could get to £530...inc-vat...inc-balance......EXCluding Allignment

Goodyear Eagle F1's were the ones for me. Bloody good in all conditions and don't seem to wear to quickly.

Tim

Tim..how much did you pay for them..if I can ask..and what size...245/225?

AndyP. No I do mean 205's. This what came with the car (6.5J's),and this is what i was told go on them. I do believe that they are old skyline wheels though. How many other people have got these wheels, cos I understand a few have (according to se).

Had Falkons for years... seam excessively crap compared to my S02s... S03s would be great too.

Mitchelin MXXs - had those too originally, nothing special.
