Trying to cut a long story short......

Want to get some decent bass in the Z.

Installed new Sony head unit last year along with some MB quart speakers in the doors - well pleased with them. Also replaced the rears with some Kenwood 4x6s which have done f@#k all, but nevermind! Anyway, now the tricky part.....

In terms of subs, I didn't want anything big because I want space in the boot for a suitcase and also the T-tops (if I ever drive over to Italy again!). Heard that Focal had released some 5 inch subs so bought a pair of these for around £300 and put them in a small home made box which sits just behind the rear seats. Running off a 2x140W Kenwood amp you can't hear the bastards! Have I wasted £300 on a pair of (too small) subs which will never work in the boot of a car?!?!? (I'm looking for sympathy here!). Anyone managed to put a sub in the boot without taking up much space???

Cheers for any advice!

Dem.

Cant remember the exact details of this but I know that it is manufacturered by somebody (the pics are of the original although they came from a chap who 'manufactured' his own copy)

They fit in the boot space that normally has the polystyrene bits with the tools etc...

I've just finished making a the fibreglass mould to fit the other side (from the pics). It's taken me about 10 days so far, just cos I've done it it bits 'n' pieces. I'll show you some pics when it's done, hopefully end of the week.

I recognise those pictures! I made the subwoofer based on the design available from JL Audio in the US - http://www.jlaudio.com/stealthbox/300zx_2plus2.html.

The enclosure is made from MDF and uses an Infinity 10" subwoofer. Needless to say it took a great deal of time to make. It does sound OK though. The amp lives on the other side in it's own enclosure under the carpet

Re the 5" subs, it is critical to get the size of the box exactly right (it's the volume of air inside that matters). You may have already done this but have you checked that your box is exactly right ? Also, some speakers are designed for a closed box and others for a ported box. Finally, I doubt that the optimum volume of the box is simply doubled if you put two speakers in one box.

This is based on research I did when looking for mine so you'd need to check out with an expert for more detailed advice.

Incidentally, I got a Vibe 8" unit which I found great and was only about £100 (plus amp). I think there are still pics on http://www.davehairs.freeserve.co.uk
