I just bought a 300zx ('99, Jap, N/A).

I wondered what fuels to use.

The dealer who told me said he thought super unleaded.

I can get regular unleaded now and then through work very cheaply. Any idea if it'd damage the car using regular unleaded? Can I use an octane booster with regular unleaded?

Thanks guys

ps. the car is great; love it!

Use optimax. Have you got any photos yet.

You must be the first '99 owner on the forum!

Where did you find one in the end?

Most people will recommend the high octane fuels about like Optimax or the new Ultimate stuff but I think unleaded is ok if your stuck without as long as you dont drive like a madman, octane boost will definetly help. Just watch (or listen!) out for detonation etc with unleaded, although im sure some people on here run it with no problems at all  could be wrong! Generally am as I have to ask the girlfriend what fuel I should use!! :nelson: anyhow welcome to the forum

Optimax is fave in a TT, TBH i dont think it will make much odds in a N/A but its a better fuel anyway.

Bo Selecta! reeeeeeeeeeeeeeewind :D

Thanks guys.

I'm keen to use the regular unleaded with an octane booster as I get the fuel free (sometimes!). I guess we'll see if it blows up!

I'm told super unleaded is just higher octane regular unleaded so with a booster it should be ok, I guess. I might check with some specialist garage before I try it though.

Scottywill; I got the car at a dealer in Watford. I always wanted a 300 but I don't have the mechanical ability to keep a ten year old car on the road. When I saw this one I was dead keen even though it's an auto non-turbo.

I'll get some pics soon.

I'm not sure if the octane booster you get in the UK is the same as the stuff we get here but if it is it is very expensive and next to useless. By the time you put enough in to raise your octane rating 1 or 2 you will have spent a lot of money. On the can it says "raises octane 7 points" or whatever they usually mean 0.7 octane. The stuff in the can is usually toluene (paint thinner, RON 120). Buy it in bulk and it will be far less expensive.

My two cents (tuppence?).

I've heard Ultimate is jam packed with cleaning additives. I tried it when it first came out and she ran like a dog until I managed to fill her up with Optimax ;)

...I've been mixing regular and Optimax in my NA for about 4 years. Optimax is much better. It's like driving with a tail wind - and if you take it steady ie keep it below 80, you'll notice a big improvement in the mpg.

I'd like to know how much you paid for your car as I'm thinking of changing my 2+2 NA for a short wheelbase NA, and am interested in what such a 'newish' car costs...

True, but paint thinners will hardly ever be pure - not worth the risk IMO

I spoke to Jeff at Z-world.

He thinks regular unleaded is fine in a N/A if it has UK plugs fitted.

thanks again for the advice.

Tim

I'd say regular unleaded should do the trick fine in an NA, there shouldnt be any problems and if there is then the ECU should be able to compensate. Its only mainly with the import turbo's that the 95RON fuel can cause detting. My dad puts 95 in the Z (which is an import turbo) and its only caused detting once. But then Its never had optimax in, so for all I know it could be running safety boost all the time, while on that note ill put trying optimax on the things-to-do list.

I'd say try it at least, if you notice any difference then great, if not then don't bother.

it was about 10.5K.

I guess that's a lot for a 300 but it's 1999, clean, low miles and standard.

I think that's about the same as you'd pay for a 2 litre petrol C-class merc of the same age, so put like that it seems ok value.
