How did you check the timming? if you used the pickup link on the ptu it will give you the wrong reading!

Thats ok then, as i did my timming on the little black wire and it said it was out so i pluged a sparklead into the coil pack and the other end onto the plug and conn4ected the pickup to that. But if your timing is out then it must be, have you had a boost upgrade? as i think some companys retard the timimg to alow the extre boost safely.

no boost upgarade matie, do you think I should put it to 15 deg, is this why is get detonation because its at 10deg?

Could be, you can always try it to see if it fixes it, but just be very careful

should the car be just idling to make an adjustment on the timing?

cheers

You're more likely to get detonation with over advanced ignition timing (15+ degrees) - you shouldn't be getting any at 10 degrees advance (!?). Advancing to 15 may make the problem worse if it is an ignition timing problem. If you're at 10 degrees you should be quite down on power.

One thing though, I read somewhere that if your timing is retarded your engine will run hotter so if you've got a cooling problem, the retarded ign may be making things worse.

cheers rob, this may account for the colour the plugs have been since i got the car, they've always been really clean looking as though there over heating? and never ever the nice brown powder colour.

many thanks mate

I think with most ECU controlled cars the plugs tend to be white as if running lean. This is because you are running fairly lean when running around town. If you give it a good thrash and then turn the engine off and coast to stop then check the plugs you might find that nice tan colour.
