Hi all

I recently had a 4-wheel allignment adjustment done (following replacement of front ball joint) and the steering wheel is now not quite straight - it's about 1cm down to the right.

I went back to the allignment guy 3 times and that was the best he could get it. He specialises in the more unusual cars, Zeds GTOs Porkers and those lowered to fook, so he doesn't seem a fool. He reckons all the settings are spot on now, including the front track, suggesting someone before simply unbolted and replaced the steering wheel.

I've now noticed the steering gets much stiffer after a long m'way run (especially in a 125mph r'hand curve yesterday - scared the fook out of me at first:eek: ). The HICAS light has not come on and the fluid level is fine. I saw Andy Duff mention in another post that the steering wheel MUST be straight otherwise the HICAS gets confused.

So can I simply remove & replace the steering wheel or should I try another allignment specialist?

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Richard...

Have you check to see if you have a bulb on the hicas light?

When my light came on the steering did exactly the same.. Dead scary!! - Especially as I wasn't driving!!!

I'd wait till someone like Any Duff replies, but I would think just moving the steering wheel will be the best approach...

Cheers

There should be no excuse from them. If they knew they couldnt do the job correctly they shouldnt have started it.

I have never had problems with the place I goto in Bolton. They have got the tracking perfect every time.

I would count this as a learning esperience and try to find another place.

Hi Ben

There is a bulb in the HICAS light, it comes on as usual when the ignition is switched on then goes out when I start the engine.

Thanks for the tip Stuart.

Unfortunatley Thames Tyres in Slough, who did the job in the first place, were the only ones who would touch the car near me. All other so-called 4-wheel allignment places backed away as soon as I mentioned "4-wheel steer":(

These guys were recommended by Dan Perkins Nissan, as not even they had the necessary equipment.

Hi Gio

That's the place - just past Safeway on the Farnham Road.

I originally went to Pro Tyre, on Slough Trading estate. I always used them when I had my Supra. But as soon as I mentioned 4 wheel steer to the chap on reception he imediately said "No, can't do that - go down the road to Nissan:confused: )

Perhaps I'll ring them and speak to the actual operator of the allignment equipment.

How odd

Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the operator - it's always the same guy and he does know about ZXs. They're definitely on their laser aligment computer! I last went there in November so it's not that long ago.

Just remember that HICAS doesn't operate when static - so the rear wheels should be straight ahead. Perhaps they thought you wanted the 4-wheel steering itself adjusting? Dunno.

Hi Gio

If I remember, the operator of the allignment machine was called Lee.

I'll call them this week and speak to him, as he should know.

If they have done your Zed OK then I'll give them a try.

Richard:)
