I was told by a few people that the engine has to be removed when removing the turbos. But when looking at the 300zx service manual, it actually shows you how to remove them, & no mention of engine removal.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Believe me its easier to remove the engine to do the turbos rather than trying to do them still on.

I spoke to several garages about this and they all said that its easier to remove the engine to do it.

i got the near side one off in the rain today

some of the nuts were a little fiddily

needed to use a spanner head socket.

heh and then you gotta get it back on!! good luck, putting them on with the engine out is a bad enough foul language inducing event, hold turbo, get nut, sqeeze fingers to rear studs on manifold, attempt to place nut on stud, drop nut, "*&^£$*&^"£*&$^*&"*£*^$&*^"£*&$, hold turbo reach for nut on floor....repeat until tears!

when i had mine done pretty much every garage i spoke to did it with the engine out.

if the engines out could do a few other usefull things a little more cheaply too. if the timing belts need doing soon then you may aswell do them when the engines out as it makes it a fair bit easier and cheaper. could also take the EGR valve out if thats soemthing you would consider

Near side one isn't too bad with engine in, its the offside one thats the royal PITA. Sorry not taking anything away from you Stevo ;) If you're doing both then its quicker and easier to pull the lump...
