Spent about an hour today making up and fitting 4 new earth wires with connectors. In red and yellow of course :D:D:D I made sure all the earthing points I connected them too were nice and shiney and conductive ;) Very easy job with a soldering iron, screwdriver and 10mm spanner ;)

Immediately upon startup I noticed the idle settled straight to 800rpm whereas normally it would spend a few seconds dropping from 1,200rpm. Idle noise was smoother.

I blipped the throttle whilst stationary and the change was obvious. I didn't think anything was out of order before but now the revs react quicker to stabbing the throttle, and the exhaust note is smoother and the rise in note sort of more linear as you press the throttle, and less/no overrun on the revs when you back off.

Driving the car it seemed a fair bit pokier, smoother and gear changes actually felt a bit more forceful, dunno if thats the ALC's input now being stronger?? I only took it a couple of miles and didnt try anything silly as its wet.

I'm well chuffed with the results, and it looks good too - see pics. And best of all it cost me less than £7!! :D:D:D:cool:

I expect people to reply with it being due to the ECU resetting whilst the battery was unhooked, but it was more than that. Ok I bet the effect is mainly because the earth strap is old etc but the difference is there.

Thoroughly recommended - do it!

Pete

Well, where are the pics then Shrimpy?

Oh yeah, by the way. Managed to send you Pillar today. If you remember, I PM'ed you to say that I was going to send it a couple of weeks ago. Well, I gave it to the Mrs so send out for me but she decided to right her car off before she could get to the post office.

Anyway, finally sent it today so it should be with you in a few days.

Take care - Cos..

sorry - looks like jumped the gun..

Ace, cheers Cos, good man! I'll put you a cheque in the post -was it £35?

Re the pics: You look silly now, better edit quick

Pete ;)

Yeah - something like that mate.

Take care.

Pete, is that 7? different earthing leads just piggybacked?

Where did the soldering Iron come into play? Did you just unbolt a bolt then put 2 straps to each?

What lengths and thickness cables did you use - just to meake it easier to order from my local car-mart :)

Hi mate, I'lltry my best to describe ;)

There are 4 leads, I soldered a ring connector onto each end of all 4.

Lead1: Battery -ve to bolt behind RHS throttle body, pic3

Lead2: RHS Throttle body to bolt holding fuse box to wing.

Lead3: Battery -ve to bolt on balance bar, pics 1&2.

Lead4: Bolt on balance bar to bolt holding a bracket to to bulkhead, pic2, by autobox dipstick.

The wire I bought from a motor factors, it says "Autoleads 12V Power Cable 8mm^2" along the side. I got 2metres as thats all they had, I would've bought more but the 2 metres was just right for the four connections I made.

Yep I just undid the bolts, cleaned the mating surfaces up and refitted with the ring connector attached.

Hope that helps

Pete

Star, Cheers Pete

Thanks again

Only just read this:

I hooked up my Jump lead to the negative and went around the plenum and surrounding area's with the other end to see if it made a difference and the places where I have the 'grounding' is where the engine note changed (for the better) as I touched it........

.

Damn that IS a good idea! Will do that on me next motah then

Pete

Matty - is that Blue cabling or cabling wrapped in Blue Silicon>?

Matty, damn fine idea that. Im gonna try this aft, should the engine be warmed up and just left idling or is it best to do it when engine is cold and tickovers on auto-choke?

I did it both ways and got almost the same results, that's why it took me so long to do mine!

plus having a hot engine to keep warming your hands on is good!!

;)

Matty.

Nice one lads:) Have great results after fitting mine:dance:

Just tried what you said Matty, with the jump lead touching different points - no difference in engine note :(

I have noticed mine has straps coming from the -ve terminal. One goes straight to schassis the other goes to the support bar? on the engine. Connected jump lead to -ve on battery and went round the entire engine bay and could not find any difference.

Only works if you've already convinced yourself that it will ;)

Sorry fella but I beg to differ!!

My 'grounding' may have been on it's way out, so a worthwhile mod for me (and Pete) However, When 'nightbreeder' tried it on his nothing happened and this may mean that there is nothing wrong with his 'grounding'.

So doing this mod is going to be suited to each individuals car, it will be needed on some and not on others......all depends on the 'grounding' and it's condition on the car already.

All I can say with 100% confidance is that it's done my Z lots of good.

But it sounds like nightbreeder already has a secondary earth strap which will have been improving the earth anyway. I bet if he took it off the car wouldn't run as well ;)

This is true, not all cars ,even same makes will benefit, but worth doing as a back up ,especially on performance cars like Zs and Skylines, theres a couple of GTR lads that wish they had done it,engines gone pop due to bad earths sending ECU nuts while full chat,Bang!!!plus Rod Bell knows what he is on about:)

Just seen that nightbreeders is allso a UK spec, wonder if Jap and uk differ, would be interesting to find out:)mind you Mattys is UK,worth checking,i only had the one earth from battery,to the rear bulk head area!
