Thinking of upgrading from an mr2 tubby to a 300zx- should it be done??

Hiya all,

Im 23 and currently have a rev2(220bhp) mr2 turbo which I love, I think its top and its v. fast and all, but Ive had it over a year now, and basically I want something a bit faster!

Thing is, I cant afford a supra, and I thought the closest thing with a twin turbs and v6 sound is a 300zx!

Ive been toying with the idea for a while, but would it be worth the upgrade as on paper the speeds arnt really that different with the zx being so heavy etc.

Also Ive seen bhp figures for zx @300 and 280hp? which one is right? What sort of BHP can you easily squeeze out of them.

Im in 2 minds at the moment anyway, whether to just keep the old tubby which is a very sought after car, get a 300zxTT or to get an evo2 or something like that.

Id just like to hear your experiences of them and what sort of things the zx performance is comparable, races youve had with people on the road and 1/4 mile times and stuff.

Oh yeah , do 300zx's have any back seats ?

Cheers for any responses!

Jon.

In short, yes buy a zed, youll love it.

1. Yes they are heavy, but once the big beasts are moving theres not alot that will out accellerate it on our roads.

2. Theres lots of conflict over whether uk/ jap, man/auto is 280 or 300 bhp. I was always under the impession that it was only the U.S ones that were 300bhp, but i dont know for sure, having said that its sooo easy to get it chipped to over 300 brake these days that its hardly an issue.

3. Hard to say about races, ive beaten 4.0 supercharged jags in mine, but you never know how hard the other driver is pushing it, and on the other hand ive been beat by a souped up polo!!!

4.Some 300 have back seats (all uk ones are 2+2, and twin turbo, Jap ones come in 2+2, and 2 seater SWB, both available in TT and N/A).

Good luck in your search.

Wanna swap mate lol? ;)

Nothing really touches the 300ZX on the road in the dry.

Stock 1/4 mile is reckoned to be 13.8s with a manual zed, though people get more like 14.4ish

I've had 13.5@106 with my lightly modded Jap Auto, before I upped the boost from 12 to 15psi, so if I havent sold it by our next Santa Pod event I'm hoping for 13.2/3ish :)

280BHP is the accepted stock figure round here I think, 300BHP is mentioned for US models on 100RON fuel I think

Cheers

Supras are not V6. Supras sound boring too. ;)

On paper they are not too much different in speed 0-60. Its over that where the Z is its prime. It is a heavy car and it is a large car as it is a sports touring car and not a sports car like the MR 2.

Its hard to say what the power is. Some say 300bhp some say 280. The US manual one is 300bhp and US Auto is 280. The Japanese Zs are 280bhp but its not too well known if the Euro/UK one is 300 or 280.

Modifying it is easy. It all depends on how much money you have. Induction, exhaust, ECU chip and increased boost will give you anything between 350-400bhp depending on the condition of the engine. But a stock clutch wont last too long at that power.

Only you can make that choice. The Evo 2 for me look boring dated and are no where near as good as the new ones, so dont think you are getting a fabulas car. You have the choise between 2 very different cars. MR2-T is a little light fast car, the 300ZX-TT is a heavy very powerful touring fast car, and EVO 2 is based on the old Rally car.

Races? We dont race on here ;)

I have seen off Porsche Boxters with ease and 911s for that matter. I will have no chance against a new 911 Turbo though, not may things will ;)

A few went to Santa Pod a few months ago and all got very poor times. The track was slippy as hell and one lane was closed down because it was too slippy. I think the fastest time of the day was a Subaru only because of the 4WD. Supras, 300ZX, Lotus GT3 all had very poor times.

Yeah they do. There is a 2 seater 300ZX but they are very rare and very sought after. :D

Cheers for any responses!

Yeah and pay out over £1000 when it knackers up

I switched from an MR2 to a ZED this summer, and Im glad I did. The MR2 is a nice car, but the ZED is a much better car, more solid, (heavy) and if you drive long distances, a much more comfortable car.

lol, gets me every time. :D

As Stuart says, OVER 60 is where the Z comes into its own. Its not hard to make a car quick to 60, its past that where the real stuff starts! I've had mine for over 3 years and the mid-range still makes me smile.

3rd gear on the motorway????? Lovely.

Look around for a good one, don't rush into anything and you will not regret it.

Have a nose at this aswell http://www.300zx.org.uk/tech_20.htm

An Evo has its plus points but man is it boring looking! Just look at the lines of a Z............. say no more!

as standard they are quick cars, enough to put a big smile on your face ---> :)

get it chipped, boost upgrade, induction, exhaust, uprated clutch & poss lightwieght flywheel & decat & it turns into this ---> :D

doesnt cost the earth to get to this stage either
