Looks like I might have a fuel leak. Is there any particular weakness in the engine bay that crops up more than others?

 

Am also interested in people's mileage. I seem to be getting around 120 miles to a tank. TT with Turbo Technics Turbo's at approx 0.68 bar. Is this about right?

what kind of driving do you do? I can get as low as that if I only do short journeys through London. On motorways you could stretch to 300 miles though.

 

For a leak, if it's coming from the engine bay, just go round tightening all the fuel line clamps in the engine bay, plenty of write-ups on it.

My one was between the hard-pipe coming from the pump and the rubber hose that goes to the fuel filter, but loads were loose and needed tightening

I got over 320 on a single run in my Z.

 

The neck could be leaking. Does the petrol cap hiss when you unscrew it?

I'm not booting it everywhere. I general try and back off the revs to kicj in to O/D as soon as possible. I'm extremely reluctant to push this car as 1) it's too wet and 2) I don't want anything to blow up!

 

The petrol cap does hiss and I guess this is correct.

Can you smell fuel when the engine is cold - a common thing to happen is the hoses contract when it gets cold and creates gaps for fule to escape - then as the engine heats up, the pipes expand and the smell goes away - you have to go through all the hose clips and make sure they are all nice and tight.

 

 

120 miles is quite bad - I get routinely 150 to a tank driving to work and back and general to and from shop runs. Unless all your journeys are less than 5 mins as it doesnt give the car long enough to warm up and it will drink it like theres no tomorrow...

I have had the KMH to MPH conversion done and it seemed like the milometer was still reading KMH. However, it looks like I'm getting OK mileage now as my milometer is reading miles (well roughly anyway :D)

 

The car does smell when it's warming up and then it goes away. Where can I find out where all the pipes are? I'm crap with cars. OK with PC's though so ask away!

Me again!

I had a petrol leak once. Only stong smell of petrol first 5/10 mins then would go away.

Took it to garage they kept it running for 20 mins, found nothing!

This went on for three weeks!

Then one time I started up the Z opened up the bonnet & looked at the pipes at the rear of the engine & found one of the rear pipes leaking, well not the pipe exact but the clip of the pipe. Only a drip, the fuel pipes run along the back but you need to look at all the clips & all the fuel pipes when you start up & look very carfully for that drip!

There's only really a few of the hoses that seem to leak. You'll have to remove the centre cover to get to them though - main ones to check are, the one from the fuel pressure regulator on the left bank down to the fuel rail (most common) and the hose joining the two fuel rails together under the throttle linkage in the middle at the front... Just tighten the clamps up while its still cold - you may actually need to replace the clamps though if they are at maximum tightness...
