Just drove to work this morning in about 4 inches of snow. The local council in their infinate wisdom have been gritting the roads for about 3 weeks, but all the rain on Saturday must have washed it away leaving me with a drive on a main dual carrageway on said white stuff. The thing is as i was going in a straight line in 5th at 30kms the HICAS must've been activating cos the arse end of the car was waggleing back and forth yet the wheels weren't spinning (slightly scary:eek: ). Has anyone else experienced this? I just thought it might be getting a tad confused with the variable surface and lack of traction.

could be the diff compensating? Doubt the HICAS would be doing much if you werent moving the steering wheel.

LSD and snow is a bad thing. (If only because you'll have the Vice Squad knocking on your door LOL)

 

When you're driving on snow you sort of expect both wheels to slip most of the time, and the LSD actually stops this happening by sending power to the wheel that currently has traction. So the driver will get confused by having too much grip, and worse, will never quite know which side of the car has the grip and hence which side the power is being sent to.

 

I guess if the wheels are spinning in 2nd they might be doing 30mph even though the car isn't, which would also confuse HICAS...

 

This is why my daily driver is a feckin great lump with FWD. :)

i had the same today as i was driving on sheet ice the car was going in a straight line at 20mph but the back end felt like it was twitching side to side as if it was sliping i thought it was going to spin on me as only 2 days ago the car spun on black ice.

iam thinking of geting the lock kit to stop the 4 wheel steer

I learn't to drive in my old mans Rover 2600 sdi which was rear wheel drive and twichy as it was it just didn't behave like the zed did yesterday:confused:

snap i had a cossy rwd 4 years ago and other rwd cars but it did not feel like the zed thats because they never had this 4 wheel steer

i think the back end on my zed is geting sloppy and needs new rubbers maybe thats why it was twitching in the ice and snow

having a full check over a 12 th jan to see what the car needs or whats on its way out

Combine RWD with an LSD and very wide tyres - hey presto - a very unpredictable car!!!!! If you don't move the steering wheel, the HICAS won't move - it responds to steering wheel movement full stop! Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure HICAS doesn't work until a certain speed anyway so driving slowly it shouldn't be doing anything at all....

I'm sure your tyres will be fine - the Z just dont work on snow or ice full stop. Tyres are too wide and cant bite through the stuff. Get some Micra tyres or something.

i did they look great on my micra which is my runabout over the bad months, tho i did take the zed out yesterday, not been in it for 3 weeks, nice and dry it goes better than ever, a 2nd car definately makes u appreciate the zed beast even more.

I was actually gonna suggest trying thinner tyres as a joke, but didn't want forum members deaths on my concience when it comes to summer and they forget :D:D:D

 

If you're worried about rubbers etc then how does the car drive in the dry?

Also beware leaving an auto in drive as you brake even gently to a stop on snow just after starting from cold. The front wheels lock up and the rears just keep on pushing you forwards on fast tickover. Scared the proverbial out of me until I realised what was happening and selected neutral to stop it. Also worse with wide 18" as they tend to ride over the snow.

Seriously though the 300 is a bit of a b**ch in the wet never mind the ice and snow because of the amount ot power and the aggressive manor in which it lays its power down. Isn't that why we love em so much. Its like a fiesty woman they are great in the bedroom but when you've got a hangover and don't want to do anything man they're a pain, but which would you rather have.

My Daihatsu Sportrak is 10x more rear end happy than then Z in the snow! ?? So not sure what wrong / right there. Zed is only ever a handfull when the right foot is twitchy :D

?? Hmm, something odd there, my Z probably has the nicest power delivery of and other car I've had - and thats with 500+ ponies under then bonnet. Only 'aggresive' when boost comes in full, but not much chance of getting full boost in the snow :D

Mine isn't standard either, but it's auto and I do have size 11s and no other driver aids:D :dance:
