Hey guys,

Started my lovely silver bullet this morning and noticed a rather loud metallic noise coming from the engine. It was as if something was repeatedly hitting something metallic and increased in frequency as the revs piled on. It promptly disappeared after about 8 miles and seems fine now. Any thoughts what it may have been?

As always, your wisdom (both good and bad) is greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, anyone interested in buying 4 stock ZX (Jap) alloys with new rubber? First £300 offer gets it (excl. p&p).

Cheers smile.gif

I have the same hassle except its a bit worse.

Im changin oilt his weekend before trax so hopefully that will solve it.

When your engine is cold or has been standing idle for a while all the oil will settle to the bottom of the engine and will be rather cold and viscous.

For a brief period after a cold start some parts are running metal to metal until the oil can get itself upto all the moving parts.

Also your oil feeds do get a little blocked by crap over the life of the engine so if it percists then a flush may be needed.

As the noise stopped after a while it suggests the oil was cold and eventually it got to the rattly bits so not to worry.

One solution is to add an engine oil additive that coats the moving bits with teflon or some such slippery coating. Have a look in Halfords.

I seem to recall Slick 50 did this?!

Another good idea is to use a good oil and change it very regularly.

I wouldn't recomend one of those additives. I used one and after about 6 months or so, the turbos packed up. Maybe it had nothing to do with it, but I've always had the car serviced/oil changed every 6 months so I was suprised when the turbos packed up on 63k.

Mat Lad has my vote too! Magnatec, never had any problems with rattles, squeaks etc. from engine with that in me lump...ohhhh eeeerrrrrr!!!

I wouldent touch additives for anything. Any additive that has to be strong enough to remove gunk/dirt or soemthing cannot be good for delicate parts in an engine.

Nah - don't use additives - you're asking for trouble!!!

As far as oil flushing goes.... it tends to be ok doing an oil flush on most engines BUT - what can happen is that worn seals accumulate the sludge and this is what keeps the joints sealed. Remove this sludge using a flush and the seal leaks!

If you really want to remove the crap, do an oil change but put some cheaper oil in (be carefull how cheap you go wink.gif ). Run the car for 250-500 miles and then drop the oil again and put some decent stuff in (magnatec seems to be pretty good for the price smile.gif ). This will clean out most of the crap.

Thanks guys - guess I'm off in search of Magnatech 10W40. Is this semi or full synthetic oil? Also, have any of you good experiences of running on 15W30 fully synthetic oil? A mate of mine in the US uses this and seems to be happy with it.

Cheers!

Dan, go to Harry Halfords for Magnatec mate...be careful though, two different types. One is marked for "Basic Engines" which you defo don't want. Other is marked for "Modern Advanced Engines" which is the one you do want. It's Semi-Synthetic but Toyota main dealer and Saab Main dealer used to use it for servicing both my Turbo cars...did shit loadsa mileage both motorway and short journeys during the week where ever I was based. Never had any problems with it, I think when I asked Nelson they said they use it also...seems to be the preferred semi-rally performance oil for the people. Give it a go mate.
