Does anyone make a stronger/ less stretchy set?

Featured Replies

Yes I believe ARP do a set, but the stock ones are meant to be more than capable!

How did SE determine that your original ones are stretched, without dismantling your engine?

I don't think you are meant to have ones with less stretch, I believe they are meant to have elastic properties!

It not at SE mate, its at DP motorsport.

They dont reckon its the gaskets themselves as they are only about 10 months old (steel nismo jobbies) so I guess the next thing its gonna be is bolts.

Apparently they had a gtir chuck in the towel in a similar manner, but that was pushing close to 2 bar, and mine only 1.4:rolleyes:

I think it all boils down to the fact that either me or the car is cursed:rolleyes: :(

There is a well known problem with metal head gaskets for the Zed!

None of them work!

It is acknowledged by most people on TT.net and PeteR at SE!

If it is them and DP guaranteed the work and gaskets it is a

warranty fault!

Well thats worrying cos i have a 2mm greddy head gaskets to put on my rebuild!!??:(

On the other hand surly major car tuners like HKS, Nismo and greddy wouldnt make the metal head gaskets if they didnt work:confused:

There is a tech write up on TT.net which is very interesting.

In this write up it is said that always use Paper head gaskets.

Metal one WILL go after 2-3 years while paper one can go over 10 years.

As soon as a leak starts on a paper gasket the paper stretches and creaps into the leak, blocking it.

Once a metal gasket goes, its gone.!

If they started to admit that metal head gaskets don't work on a zed, people would start to question their use on other cars, where they could well work! Maybe it's something to do with the VG30Dett!!

metal head gaskets are fine for competition use, not very well suited for street use for this very problem. they are a lot stronger, but their sealing properties are not so good :(

I agree Paul, i had the same decision to make some years ago during my rebuild, when at RC developments, so decided on Copper ringing the block instead, around the same cost as metal gaskets. Metal ones are good for lowering the compression though as most are a lot thicker than stock.

cheers

smithy

So it looks like copper ringing is the way to go then?

What about mig wiring - what does that entail?

Same thing Adam ;) I'm with everyone else on this - stay WELL clear from metal head gaskets!!! You'd be amazed how much abuse a standard gasket can take! Headbolts stretching and causing it to leak? Bwahahahahahahahaha Sorry but that is just tooooo stupid to even consider - the whole idea of stretch bolts is that (surprisingly) they stretch under tension when fitted. This allows the heads and cylinders to expand under heat and also keep the compression on the headgasket...

But isnt that what happened to Stuart (SMW1)'S car?

Well my mechanic (dad!!) is still convinced that if its done properly then the metal HG will be better??

Will a standard one work with alot of power??

Also if i choose to run alot of power and a metal HG will only last for 2 years or so then great...i only wish the other components will last that long:D

Ive bought them now so i might as well try them

Again another bit of info, according to the mechanic who sorted my Z,best thing if using a metal head gasket is to use ARP head Studs rather than head bolts(in fact he recomends using them anyway on cars running big power)he allso said to run the car for a few miles get it hot then re tighten all again, but as he realises, that would take some time with a Z( so much to take off)

Hope this all seems viable, all helps i suppose

;) ,Tony

ps,he has just changed from bolts to studs on a masserati, head bolts stretched

Hi Tony

We was already going to get head studs for my baby anyway but we shall see how it goes!! any idea where the best place to get them from??

Cheers

Kirbz

I can ask him tommoro, maybe he can get them cheaper,:)
