power surging @ low trottle setting

i have written about this problem b4

basicaly when i am driving my car and im just barely restin my foot on the gas it surges(power delivery is not constant)

dont do it when im cruising at speed coz i got the peddle another knats cock further pushed down..

only does it when the thottle is almost completly closed

i have replaced the TPS and did no good

i have tried disconnecting the O2 sensers and this made no dif either

i also cleaned the trottle bodies, but i never reset the ECU should i do this?

i have a slight suspision it might do it worse on colder days.

it has a K&N filter fitting b4 i got the car and i looked it today and the plastic bit that sits underneath the filter has been cut away so god knows what weather and shit has gotten in the filter, maybe screwing the airflowmeter? although it all looks nice and clean.

SOME BODY HELP ME..it is realy starting to piss me off!

Also i want one of them cool conzult things to go on my laptop but, damnnnn 265quid!.....anyone got a 2nd hand one that they wanna sel me?

this might be the problem then as you should have felt a difference when crusing or only using a small amount of throttle.

You need to hook up to a conzult so you can see the readings.

I used to have problems when crusing and chaning speed slightly on the motorway, but would be fine when flooring it. 02 sensors sorted it for me :)

One thing to check is make sure both throlttles are syncronised (opening the same amount) it is very common to see these wrongly adjusted and if one butterfly opens before the other it upsets the light throttle operation.

If they are wrong the adjuster is on the right hand throttle shaft, undo the small lock nut and then back off the screw, until it is just makes contact and check the operation again and if ok tighten the lock nut whilst holding the screw.

yeah.i did check the throttle already to make sure they were in 'balance'

all i know is it is damn anoying.

Where are u?

north of brighton by 20 miles

Maybe you could try changing the AFM, that seems to be a common fault on the Zed. It can cause all sorts of weird symptoms too.

Even a consult isn't 100% when it comes to detecting a wounded AFM, it might be best to borrow someone elses AFM & give that a go if you can.

Mine isn't running too well at the moment either

Reset the ecu just disconect the batery for 1 hour or more, it might make a diference.

what is a AFM? and what does it do?

AFM =Air Flow Meter, measures the amount of air being drawn (forced ;) ) into the engine & fuels accourdingly.

can cause poor idling, lack of power, surging & flat spots if faulty.

also worth checking for air leaks.

have you done an ECU diag?

ah yes i hadnt realised AFM was a airflow meter

yes i have done a self diag on the ECU..im wondering something

the K&N cone filter has the plastic pannel bit that when under the oem filter all cut away around it and it kinda pokes down though the cut away there for allowing air to blow strait against it when traveling down the road, i gather the air flowmeter monitors air flow by messuring the amount of heat the air takes away from the senser as it travels over it

do you think that the fact it is exposed to the front of the vehicle might be making it act funny?

or am i completely barking up the wrong tree mad?

ok i read that article and this sound promising

If there's an aftermarket K&N style filter on the car, make sure the splash guard is covering the front of the filter and run a couple strips of duct tape on the bottom. Running the filter(s) in open air can be problematic. The idea is air coming directly in the front facia while shouldn't be able to hit the filter element directly. The hesitation felt with this problem will mostly be when slightly off throttle while cruising, driving into the wind, or driving alongside or behind other vehicles at speed.

this sounds like my problem,

so im gonna try to fix this and it shouldnt be to expensive if this is what is wrong

the bit in the article about 1990 cars all having ify heads dont sound so good though (mines a 90) :(

ill try it and let you know the answer.

  • 4 weeks later...

ok..SUCCESS

this is what i did..

i replaced the defective splashguard.

then i cut a 2 inch high section off the bottom of a plastic round tub (so i ended up with a 2 inch deep tray about 10inches diameter) and attached it using screws to the bottom of the cone filter forming a guard.

the car is 100% better now and smoother at all throttle settings

shame some blind git in a scooby reversed into it and dented the wing just after xmas..tosser!

anyway..thanks so very much for all your help and advice..big time!
