My fuel warning light is misbehaving - it comes on even when the tank is full. And then it goes off. And then it comes on again. This week, it is mostly staying on.

From the manual (pages FE-3, EL68), it seems the warning light sensor is in the same assembly as the Fuel pump and gauge assembly.

Looks like a dodgy connection somewhere. Hopefully.

Has anyone else had this and what did you do about it?

Thanks - Gio

no advice I'm afraid but can offer sympathy. Mine is exactly the same except it lacks the air of mystery - it's just on all the time.

will watch this thread with interest...

...mines never been on. But it is an NA - so maybe it hasn't got one and maybe it dosn't need one?

good luck

Jack

..if I were you I'd dismantle the float mechanism as 'normally - in other cars' the sender is part of that unit.

I don't understand how the warning light can be on when the fuel gauge is working (I'm assuming that it is working, right?) becuase the light seems to be triggered by the float indicating low .... if the float was stuck near the bottom of it's travel then the fuel gauge should also show empty ...

yes, fuel gauge on mine works fine but the light stays on even on those all too frequent but brief moments when its full to the brim with optimax.

Mind the warning light is so dim I hardly notice it, especially in daylight. Don't think it get my attention if it was a real fuel emergency!

Yes that's what I thought - however, if you take a gander at EL-68 you can see that the float uses a different pair of wires to the warning lamp. The float drives a potentiometer of some sort and the warning lamp sensor is a simple on/off.

Same assembly, different wotsits.

LOL, is that a technical term then? :D

bit like when someone asks me what is wrong with their computer.... "It's f*cked mate".

Not sure that's an issue, I'm just scared I'd have about 3 miles of petrol left!

Not that I've seen Nicholas parsons in stocking and suspenders!

:p

dunno about you guys but for me the light comes on really dim just above the E line, then as theres less and less fuel the warning light gets brighter.

Is this a bit of a myth then?...

I cant understand how people think this?

The fuel is drawn from the tank with one pipe, regardless of how full the tank is the fuel will still be being drawn from the same place!!

Yeah, and it gets stirred up each time you go over a bump .....

When my gauge shows empty and the light comes on I can get a maximum of about 55 litres in it, whats it meant to hold??

Paul:)

72 litres I believe. I generally do about 20 miles with the light on and then put in about 65 litres. Most I have ever put in was 68 I think.

Yeah I only get 55 litres in too  I've never run the tank til it the light comes on but I cant believe theres 20 litres to go when it says empty??

Maybe the the Japenese had a group buy on smaller lightweight fuel tanks... ;)
