I've just been told that to replace the speed sensor on a TT the garage have had to drop part of the autobox. It's a free job to me so I'm not worried but it does sound unlikely to me?

 

Can one of you more intellignet types confirm.

I dont recall having to drop the transmission to change the speed sensor.

 

Least on a manual its easy to get to.

Yes more than likely or a badly fitted speed convertor if you're an import

When my speed sensor went the HICAS light would come on intermitantly and the steering went heavy when parking but very light sometimes when driving.

It was sometimes hard to keep the car in a straight line at speed as the slightest touch of the wheel made the car move.

It made the car feel really light as thought there was no grip at the front.

Also the speedo would occasionaly drop to zero for a minute or two.

Just depends how bad it gets as to what shows up.

The box DOES NOT have to be removed to change the speed sensor!!! Why change a 20 minute job into a 4 hour one ffs???

So, do I just jack up one side of the car and find the sensor. Does it unscrew? do i need any tools - I take it I can just pull the 2 wires off (are they spade connectors?).

Can you check or refurb a speed sensor?

Could it be down to poor contact of the wires?

If the speed sensor unscrews or whatever am I likely to lose any oil?

Just jack it up and remove the screw holding it in place.

I think there's a connector about six inches from the sensor that you unplug it from.

You might get a bit of oil running out so get ready to plug it up while you inspect things.

You will need a new sensor and/or pinion gear from Nissan unless its a dodgy connector but unlikely.

Cheers for that - I may just make sure sensor wires are on snug and tight. If not I'll pop it off and plug it up with an old rag.

As its a uk manual I would have thought that an incorrectly fitted sensor would not be the case. Im just hoping that some crud is on the connection. Is it possible to inspect without jacking car up as I havent got axle stands and I dont trust Jacks.

You could drive the car half onto a high kerb?
