A Scooby WRX driver mate of mine is about to order some water spray jets for spraying water onto his intercooler (seems the STi's have this as standard). There's an Australian company that they source their jets from that charge just $18 Aus. That's just the jets, of course; you need to get pipework and a reservoir bottle, plus we'd need 2 kits I guess :rolleyes:

 

Has anybody tried water sprays, preferably fitting the reservoir in the boot ? Figured there's no room under our bonnets, and the water would be cooler if the reservoir were in the boot anyway!

 

Guess it's got to be good for when you're stuck in traffic in the summer, if nothing else ?

AdamR has a charge cooler, different setup, but the same idea of the reservoir in the boot :) I think this is electronic and varies the spray according to boost etc?

 

I guess it wouldn't be that complicated to set up a simple intercooler spray which you could activate with a button in the dash.

If you have a UK car you could relocate the head light jet washers to were the intercoolers are. I thought of doing this to my UK car, would have to get differant sprey jets though. Any ideas?

id have thought it would be a better investment buying a CO2 fogger kit. This will get the IC;s REALLY cold. But there is the downside that you will need to get the tank refilled and using it in wet weather could result in the IC cracking.

Hence the "different" wordage :rolleyes:;) I was getting at the reservoir bit...

Clarkey mate, ur not talking about the C02 purge kit are you. If you are where have u been looking for 1. Iv had good and bad things about it. Iv heard spraying nitrous is better as its colder and denser apparently.

not affiliated in any way, just a top site, even if the cars are a little garish.

I see water spray being useful for things like 1/4 miles where you can cool the charge that little bit extra on the start line rather than wait until you are doing 40mph or so, or for on the RR to help cooling as RR fans are very rarely as good as the open road.

 

Charge coolers are very good for 1/4 miles cos you can stick ice in the reservoir on the start line meaning super cool charge right off the line. Or CO2 kits as Clarkey mentioned.

 

But I woudlnt' recommend using water spray or CO2 it as somethng to be relied on all the time, IE your trying to run silly boost through a shit intercooler so you need to use it all the time on the road. Just get a better IC.

Agreed ! I'm running standard boost anyway - just thought it would be good for summer traffic jams; for when you finally get to put your foot down and it accelerates like a nova :rolleyes:

One of the guys at the GTROC tried it. He got about 5-10 BHP more on the day we dyno tested it, but I guess it all depends how hot the day is and how cold the water is. It also matters how fine the mist is, what the flow rate is and how adjustable it is.

 

I've got a controller for my car (imported from New Zealand) but haven't got around to fitting it yet. Not worth doing it in the winter so will wait for some warmer weather.

I wondered about that... but my car has less power after sitting in traffic too.

 

I think a long time crawling just heats the whole engine bay to the point where the charge has nowhere to dump heat to! Opened the bonnet after 15 mins the other night and it nearly had my eyebrows off - way different to when you've been idling it or booting it.

that would be heat soak.

Isn't this the aquamist water cooling solution???

 

If so the nissanperformancemag.com is going to fitting one next month on their 300zx... Maybe worth seeing the outcome.

Vent you bonnett if your want to let the heat out for those summer traffic jams. I'm going to get a second bonnett to have vented and use just in the summer.

Aquamist IS water injection. :)

 

Intercooler spray is only of much benefit for 1/4mile runs and for use in traffic. The STi subarus actually apply the coolant automatically at sustained high boost as well, just to keep the inlet temps down.

 

General research among the Scoob community has proven that the best jets to use appear to be the atomising water jets that are available from HomeBase and other DIY stores. They provide a good fine mist (smaller particles are better with a small amount of water).

 

No point in running a second resevoir...it just adds uneccesairy weight: Why not simply tap from the screen wash bottle (as has already been mentioned) the headlight washer feeds are actually ideal.

 

For clarity:

Although incorrect the terminology usually adopted is

Intercooler: An Air/Air device

Chargecooler: An intercooler in a water bath with a remote radiator.

Water Injection: Squirts water INTO the intercooler to aid cooling. Also sometimes mounted just in front of the throttle body for charge cooling and to keep the throttle body cool (best when computer controlled as it provides some 'contingency' to the intercooler) or can even be mounted at the cylinder tops simply to keep the bore temperatures down. This needs to run at a very high pressure to ensure atomisation is 100% effective, otherwise borewash (normally associated with overfuelling) can result.

Just figured the water would stay cooler in the boot and mean I could still use screen wash mix for the washer bottle.

Might still use the front one for simplicity tho; lazy sod that I am !

Just buy bigger intercoolers or drive through puddles, maybe have bracket mounted on the bumper with a big bucket of water with small holes in it.:D
