Legislation on Reg Plates for Imports

Hi,

Does anyone have a link for the legislation on reg plates for imports? I have been told that plate size on imports is not covered by the UK specification. So if anyone can direct me to this stuff I'd appreciate it.

Dont have an address to send you but I have had plates for some imports.

It seems that you can have any size you like as long as it fits the REAR bumper/panel where the number plate goes.

The manufacturer of the plate has to by law set the font size and spacing. Front plates have to be UK legal.

Hope this helps adn is OK

Thanks, but that is the real issue that the front plate is not subject to UK legislation - that's what I have heard and I want some support for this.

Sorry mate but, IIRC, the allowance is for cars where a standard plate would not fit. If for example you had a car where the space for the number plate was square or too small, you could fit a smaller/ square plate. The Zed method of fitting doesnt come under it as there no restriction on the size of plate you could put on there. Apart from the fact it looks pants.

I wonder at the people being stopped for it tho, I drive mine around with a very loud exhaust, blacked out windows, through the centre of croydon, never been stopped for it.

I think you can fit a smaller plate on the front (I have anyway, *****cks to 'em!) on the grounds that the jap import was designed for a small plate and the design of the cars cooling system would mean it's compromised if a larger plate is fitted blocking more of the air intake vents, if they then argue about UK coping with larger plates, you can point out that this has a larger surface area rad to and oil cooler to compensate, and if they are prepared to pay for a new engine when it overheats! you'll kindly oblige!!

Also, remember, they can't make you drill extra holes, etc. to facilitate a larger plate if the car wasn't built with them.

Complete *****x I know, but if they stop me thats what they'll get!!

Thanks Jock and RAZ that's the stuff I wanted. Yes you could argue a case for restricted space etc.
