I've got a pair of T28's and I need to fit the Forge adjustable actuators to them.

How do you go about setting them up?

Am I best taking them to a turbo specialist?

Chris.

Hi Chris,

You'll require a compressed air source, some vacuum tube, a T-piece, and an accurate boost gauge.

Set each actuator, one at a time, so that they being to open at exactly the same pressure (whatever that might be - 15 / 16 / 20psi??) and the jobs done.

Nothing complicated, just important that they're balanced.

Well SE Nissan sent me the actuators and told me they were set to give near stock safety boost so I can use my boost controller with them.

Does this mean they will already be OK to just bolt on?

When they are fixed in place do you just tighten the extension bars so they are clamping the wastegates tight shut?

How open is open when the wastegate is pushed out?

I don't really have any way of testing them with compressed air myself unless I can hire a cheap compressor of some sort.

Would one of those 12v tyre inflators do the trick?

Probably not ideal but I was thinking of getting one anyway and I have a boost gauge I can connect up.

Chris.

The boost controller will do it for you, they just need to open at the same pressure. If they are set too high the controller cannot do its job at low boost. They need to be fixed on the turbo `s to set them correctly.

LMAO how the f#ck have they set them to stock boost without them being mounted??? The pressure they open at depends on the pre-load on the actuator arm which is adjusted by changing its length...

Hhhhmmm great.

I presumed they have set them up on another set of T28's...

Surely the pressure they open at is the same whatever turbo they go on anyway?

They were meant to be set to give something near safety boost so my controller can take things from there.

Have you done this yourself Andy?

I'm getting stuck on a few bits with my engine now

What Andy said is quite true - the actuator cannot be pre-set, if its not already assembled. The adjustment of the link-arm length will determine what pressure boost is required to overcome the spring pressure inside the actuator.

For example, @ 8.5psi the actuator spring is on the point of being compressed, and at 9.5 psi the actuator is in its fully extended position.

In practice, you're setting the position of what the waste gate should be in at a particular pressure.

On my turbos, the waste gate started to move (we're talking fractions of a .mm here) when I applied 16psi of pressure to the actuator. And, as per your previous post, they are tightly clamped shut when at 0psi (i.e. open atmosphere).... and when I disconnected the link arm, it retracted back into the actuator about another 5 or 6 mm

HTH helps m8 - pity you're not so far away!!

Hi Mickey,

A boost controller will indeed control the pressure to the actuators, but there's nothing a b/controller can do if the actual actuators are opening different amount at the same pressure.

Simon.

Chris - you need a mityvac, which is a hand held pump with a gauge on. most decent tool suppliers should be able to supply this.

Thanks for your help, I think I've got the idea now.

I'll have a go at it this weekend.

Chris,

were can i find that clip of that lovely bouncy lady ???????????

Andys right. isnt he always ;) have you tried to even adjust the actuators. you can't even see one of them little know fit one with the engine in. SE's pete spent 2 days trying to adjust mine. oil filter side actuator is near impossible and only managed to lower the psi by 1.5psi now is running 16psi. mine were fitted at the wrong pressure from new, the turbos came from turbotechnichs allegedly set to 14psi when car was run for the first time they made 17.5psi.

:( still not happy as i have an APEXI boost controller that i cannot use as the boost is allready at max so playing with the settings is impossible.

Yeah I heard about your problems Tony, thats why I'm so scared of getting it all wrong!

I even called a local place to me to see if they would set them up for me but they said they wanted the car and that they had to be adjusted on the engine!

I told them you couldn't get to them but he thought he knew better.

I'd love to see how they adjust them on a set of glowing turbos!

Stay away from Well Lane Turbo Centre with a Z LOL

They sell SuperChips too!

my Advice chris is to use a boost controller if you want to up boost. if you want to lower then you are F#'ked. alougth chris if you do manage to find someone who can adjust or fit them in the car let me know.

Yes I'm using a controller but want the actuators set to give safety boost so the controller can adjust things up from there.

.....which is the way it SHOULD be done ;)

One other point to note, is that if they are adjusted too low, then the wastegates will 'blow' open as there is not enough tension to hold them shut by the actuators. This will not only cause terrible lag, but will also make it almost impossible to reach high boost...
