It's a power transistor unit, sits on the front left cambelt cover as you look at the engine from the front. When they fail you either lose all ignition at once, or 1 or more pistons will cut out!!

They are very shite, they all fail sooner or later due to poor design fault!!, if yours does you can get a good seconhand one, possibly repair the broken one, or buy a series 2 unit from the states which will last for ever!!

(but has different connector so needs a small converter)

It's what a distributor would do in a "normal" car, except it switches 12V about to the 6 coils rather than HT about from one coil. Try going into Halfords and asking for a set of HT leads for a Z32 :)

cheers guys :D finally know what the hell you lot are going on about ;)

LOL, can I watch.... :D

I bet they find you a set in no time and let you pay for them!

ok i don't understand! let me in on the joke!!

Our car doesnt have coil leads. We have one coil per spark plug and it sits on top of it. NDIS - Nissan Direct Ignition System

Eh? Seriously? OK... at the risk that you're now on a wind up... a Z32 doesn't need HT leads because the high voltage normally distributed via the HT leads ("normal" engine) to make the spark is made by a coil pack on top of each spark plug. So the PTU simply distributes low voltage around.

Like Bilky just said while I was typing this cr*p ;)

LOL! Yeah, of course. But this new look Halfords would probably dig up a set with chromed finish, OFC cable and gold-plated connectors. "That'll be 300 pounds please, sir".

I was at the car show in Glasgow about a month back and some fella tried to sell me a set of splitfire HT leads. "What kinda car you got mate?". i told him a 300zx z32 and he said, "yeah, that'll provide an extra 8% in BHP".

Silly old man!!
