Hi all, sorry to be the proverbial pain in the arse here, Im gonna go look at a zed (uk - better be) hopefully this saturday if its still for sale. The Mileage is 108,000. Is this a fairly high mileage - apparently its got lots of receipts and history. Providing it dont smoke etc and the idling is ok (Im gonna re-read the buying FAQ here) Im hopefully gonna be a zed owner and be an even bigger pain in the arse come monday.

uk with history

better than import with gobbledegoop so say history

:D :D :D :D

108000 is that all ?

steve

bear in mind if its a UK it will probably have a fair bit of rot, you have only another 12k miles till its second 60k service, and if they are the origonal turbos they are probably on their last legs.

My car has now done 167,000 miles and Im just starting to get problems.

  • Author

ok, as a rough price whats a 60k service gonna cost me?

if turbos are on way out - again ROUGHLY how much am I looking at for parts and fitting?

Cheers people

My UK car has 112K and runs sweet

Original turbos no smoke.

Has had lost of other work to keep her running though.

MyJap Z feels so much fresher . Reason being its got a genuine 45K on the clock and new shock all round.

IF you can get a genuine low mileage later Jap Z it will probably be a better buy.

That said I use the Jap car for daily driving(Hardtop)

And the UK Targa for summer.

Well my UK car has done 113,000 miles and is running sweet as a nut

in 1997 at 70,000 miles it had a new short engine and tubs

I've had a lot of rust removed however, but buying a mid-milages TT from japan may mean that its just coming into its problem zones....

Bought my UK at 111k miles over 3 years ago and its been sweet. Just a little rust in an offside rear wheel arch and rear ends of sills. Over 135k now. Cam belt done at 102 and tranny oil change as well.

What do you mean "UK-better be" FFS!!!

If you were spending £500 quid on a 12 year old banger, rust wouldn't matter, but when you are typycally spending £4 to £6K on a good zed, you don't want ANY! rust, do you???

So stop knocking imports and go and look at some good ones, especially underneath and around the edges, wev'e got 2 now, and they both look like they are about 2 years old!! absolutely mint!!

But if you don't want some minor conversion work... trans oil cooler, fog lights, de-restriction, etc.. cos you are bone idle, buy yourself a lovely UK model, rot holes and all!!

Sorry to rant, because I like all zeds, period. but you "don't buy an import" ooh no it'll be clocked, blow up at speed, underpowered" lot do talk some crap!!

Oh... don't forget, 108,000= get saving for new turbo's as they don't last much beyond this unless, it's been driven by a granny!!

Craigs car did 150k on stock tubs and its still going strong,

I'd buy an import but insurance is to high for me at the moment.

My turbos didn't last 70,000 miles though, what to say buying a import with 60,000 miles won't blow up in 10,000 miles?

On a 12 year old car you have no idea how much its been ragged, you have to pick a good solid motor and be prepared to take the rough with the smooth. If I was spending 14k on a car I wouldn't expect it to be rusty, but 6k isn't really a lot of money for a car these days, my girlfrieinds KA cost 8k.

I agree Mike that £4K isn't that much for a car, but it is for a rusty car!!, there is no way in hell that I would part with anything like £4K for something with anything more than very small stone chips in the paintwork!!

On the turbo issue, I agree with you, I wasn't bringing a Jap vs UK issue on this, just obvious that the higher the mileage, the shorter the lifespan of the turbo's!!

I've bought many high mileage "ordinary" cars in he past, and never had too much trouble, but personally with the zed being so technically complex/expensive to repair I'd not go for anything much over 60K, I'm sure there are some good 100K+ ones out there, but most will be very tired/under maintained/serviced!!

Paul

So a Japanese car may have been ragged, but lets face it most of the UK ones have been too! Considering the cost now, if you can get a rust free car which seems to have been well looked after and you are reasonably mechanical (or know someone who is) then nothing on the car's particularly sophisticated compared to say a modern ford engine which a 16 year old trainee mechanic is allowed to work on!!

But if you buy a jap auto..... its not been ragged, because the autobox won't let it overrev in any gear, and the retrictor means its never been anywhere near the cars top speed!;)

which isn't necessarily a good thing...

nothing wrong with an engine occasionally getting pushed towards its limit; although there's a difference between this and 'raggin the t*ts off it'!!!!!

Basically, nothing worse than a car which has been molly - coddled all it's life (in my experience anyway).

You've got to remember, this is a performance car, and driving it fast but well should do no harm whatsoever as long as it's maintained to a good standard.

Rich

these are sports cars and designed to be pushed, I don't tear the arse off my car whenever im driving it but it has been red lined through all gears upto 155mph

i just don't make a habit of it.

you gotta make sure all the highspeed parts get nicely bedded in ;)
