ive got a sony davs 550 home cinema dvd home cinema thingy, and my question is, why does it play my legit dvds ace but struggle with a 'backed up' dvd that has come into my posession.

the "backed up" dvd plays great for most of the film but at the odd point go wonky like its skipping or its dirty.

these backed up dvd's play fine on my ps2 but not on my all singing all dancing machine. Whys that then? i would have thought that if my dvd player would not play "backed up" versions of a film then it wouldnt play it at all, not just hiccup at the odd point in the film.

Would this be down to maybe the expensive dvd player maybe being more 'sensitive' and thus highlighting any flaws on the cheap 'backed up' dvd?

any ideas?

on another note, has anyone seen ' the ring' film yet?

whaddya reckon, i thought the ending was poo, unless i just diddnt get it!!!

Sorry mate I can't help you out on your DVD problem but have seen that film! I'm a big fan of Hideo Nakatas work and thought the Ring trilogy was inspiring stuff (his new film Dark Water was fairly predictable but still brilliantly shot and scary as hell IMO!). I guess you're talking about the "Americanised" version? Some good cinematography but not quite in the same league. If you don't mind subtitles check out the original(s) fella!;) :D

was having the same problem with back up dvd's until my supplier, I mean I started using better quality blanks, sorted the problem right out. Cant speak for PS2s tho.

Apparently this is a fairly common fault - I get the same problem with some rental films on my top of the range tosh unit.

I always clean dvds thoroughly before playing them now and that seems to help, but I guess that the surround sound gear is trying to get a lot more info of the surface of the disc than your PS2 was, so it's bound to be a bit fussier about the quality of the disc surface.

It could be a number of things.

DVD backup discs can only take 4 Gig of data - single layer

The Originals are dual layer 8 Gig of data.

The software that backs up the dvd usually copies the DVD

at a lower resolution than the original because of the single layer

Plus there is decoder software within the DVD player and this probably differs between the Manufacturers/Players.

Which really means its a bit of a lottery when it comes to playing

backup DVD's.
