Hi - I've just recieved an email from a garage in South Africa wanting to buy my MR2.

Here's the wording...

Please i would be interested in seeing the full picture of the interior of the car,The shipping and handling will be taken care of by my shipping agent ,payment would be made with a certified cheque drawn from my creditors bank in U.K,i await your soonest reply in order for the transaction to commence.

Is this a new scam? Or one other people have heard off? Anyone else experienced this?

I guess all I would be out would be some digital pictures - if the cheque doesn't clear the car doesn't go.

Steer Clear. You'll most likely never see a penny and your car will be gone.

I would proceed with caution.

But don;t give any personal details and as you said, no money ACTUALLY in your account, then no car.

Does sound iffy though, so watch out.

That sounds /well/ dodgy! We had a scam here at work asking for our bank details so some foreign company could transfer a load of money to us (for some strange reason). It sounded too good to be true. Our bank told us they'd been targetting small companies, and with the details had been transfering large sums /out/ of their accounts. This sounds kinda familiar. A total guess... maybe they'll put the money in your account until they know you've shipped your car, then transfer it back out, along with everything else in there. It just sounds too dodgy to me!

Wonder if this is the recent scam of asking to use your account to place money into it to launder it and then take it all back out again..Nice and clean.

Its almost definately a scam i read about it on autotrader a while back what they do is pay for the car with some form of stolen bonds but by the time they clear the bank has found out that they are dodgy and thus you are left with no money and no car! works something like that anyway been a while since i read it would stear well clear mate

U could just open a new account so theres no money to be nicked, and if ur worried he could somehow take his money back out, just withdraw the funds b4 he has a chance!

Or u could do what my dad does for this sort of thing, just give him my account details as he knows theres nothing in there!

its usually Nigeria that does the so called 419 advance payment scams - South Africa is usually not like this - or didnt used to be.

This could be for real just watch out for any monies asked for from you for bank charges

How can it be a scam if hes gonna pay by cheque?

If he asks for any of your details then yes, but he hasnt.

Clear the cheque 100% , then send the goods surely?

This is a scam. He will say that he has a cheque for so many thousand more than your cars value as he was buying one which was more expensive but got let down at the last minute. You get your cheque, you send him the difference because its been 3 working days and nothing has bounced. Then a guy arrives to collect the car, jobs done!

Only problem then is the cheque is dodgy but it takes a lot longer than 3 days to find this out!

No money for you and no car!

If you put a special clearance on a cheque and your bank confirms it has cleared in your account, surely they cant change their mind later?

Jeez this forum should be called 300zcynix...

Has no-one got any faith in humanity?? :( Maybe, juuuuuuust maybe he's an honest bloke who likes the look of your car and is willing to take the risk of it being a shed on good faith!

YES, proceed with caution, YES tell the bank you are worried and want comformation that the funds are 100% cleared, but NO not every human being on the planet is lying thieving scum! Give people a chance or before long we'll all be too paranoid to even sell anything to each other on this forum for less than a blood contract witnessed by god!!;)

PHatty - the cars only worth £1,300 to ship it to ZA is gonna cost easilly £700 / £900. It's nothing special or rare jus' a MK1 MR2 (OK tidy and well looked after). For £2K in South Africa you can get a really nice car (I looked on autotrader.co.za).

Yes it might be genuine, I will proceed with caution - but doing the sums something is not right here.

Far enough BarryD, I just get narked with the lack of trust some people have others. You are absolutely right to be cautious, there are a lot scumbags out there!

Maybe it's the Northener in me!:D

Good luck with the sale mate!!:)

Points to BigRoy - I just got this email. So lets see he is willing to pay £9,500 for a £1,300 car and I send £8,200 to his shipper. First one to reply SCAM wins a beer...

I received your mail with thanks,i was able to write my Creditor in U.K yesterday and he informed me this morning that he will issue out the cheque on the total money owed me for a contract we had sometime in August.Cheque will be issued on £9,500.But i want to assure you that as soon as payment of £1,300 is

received by you in the bank you will send the outstanding balance of £8,200 to my shipper through western union money transfer, my shipping agent would come in for the pickup of the car from you i shall furnish him with your full contact details.I have already sent the information you provided to me to my Creditor to

issue out the payment immediately. As soon as this is done and i am being notified i shall provide you with the necessarry information. My shipper has just travelled out of capetown yesterday night to clear my consignment of motorbikes

and cars which was shipped from Europe to western Africa. You need not to worry as i have been in this business of buying and selling for about 10 years now it has been so successful by the special Grace of God,I really hope to rely and trust in you in this transaction.I await your mail so we can complete this transaction on time.

Are you going to reply? Telling him "the score" ?

I wouldn't be able to help myself. Just to let him know what I thought.

This guy was just about to steal from you..........give him some fookin stick. What a ****

Nah I sent him an email saying I had just got cash from a local buyer. If I get his cheque though I will bank it in my "Oh bugger fund" for the ZX300. I should be able to buy some shiney bits at the very least...
