Fed up of waiting, the zed is sitting in the garage doing nothing for the while, so I figured I may as well give this a go, so has anyone done this, and if so how difficult is it?

Thanks

I done mine, full 60k service, about 1 month after i bought the zed (never having seen under the hood of one before then). I followed the instructions (off TT.net IIRC) they are not exact, but give a good idea. If you are anywhere handy with a socket set then you should be able to do it. It took me two evenings, but that was mainly because I didnt have a set of longreach allen keys (for between the top and bottom water pipes). If I was doing it again I would leave between 6-8 hours to be safe.

One tip i would offer is get your self a large piece of cardboard ( I used an opened out frosties box) and push all the bolts you take out through it and write where they came from. There are loads, and you will get confused :) apart from that get amongst it :)

Ive just taken the head off my Micra

To me thats a biggi!! But a cam belt change on a Z!

Well good luck, anything is possible.

Arthur

Easy as pie:D I did the head gaskets without knowing the first thing about the engine! (I got it as a non runner) So I replaced the timing belt while i was at it, not too difficult and not as complicated as some of these guides make out. Like Jock says, if you know your tools then you should be fine, just take your time and make sure you make notes or remember where it all goes when it comes to putting it back on. Good luck:dance:

Don't muck about Clarkey! Take it to a specialist who's in your area, like Jeff TT (and no I don't want to open a can of worms here so everyone behave ... ;) ) If you get anything wrong with placing the belt back on (assuming you manage to get all the bits off in the first place) then the results could be disasterous. Which means a lot more money to be spent setting things right. Better to leave things like this to those who've done it dozens of times.

Just my 2p worth ...

Regards,

On the other hand if you do it right then you could be doing other peoples as well soon ! ;)

It's not that difficult if you can a) use a socket set, b) read & c) count

Go for it !

i reckon i could do it, afterall ive got ages to do it. I tried to look at the ttzd tech article last night but it wasnt working. Ill try again now.

d) lie under the car with oil, water and general shite dropping in your eyes while still hold that bit on with your nose and trying to put a 10mm bolt in a hole you cant see/feel/get to....

 only joking! non of that is involved with this job....i think......

does the 300zx have a non interference cam belt? like the MR2 ?

ie if it goes it won't damage the engine? or is it a valve bender?

Matt

it is said that if it goes at low revs you may be lucky and not bend any valves.

Ah for the days of the ford pinto, break a belt at full tilt, change the belt, set the timing and drive on :D

Jock, was`nt the pinto such fun, tapered seat spark plugs that often got overtighened and then would not budge, as a quick point though the 2.0 litre was ok as it had a slightly taller head but the 1.6 litre was a valve bender if the belt went ..trust me I know the hard way.. in 1989 one December night on the North Circular!

Managed to fit another belt with a basic tool kit in the boot and limped it home but it was was well buggered. 5 valves and a damaged piston! was only doing 30mph..honestly.

afaik the MR2 engine will hit the valves if the belt snaps. I know for sure the scooby engines are non interference design though.

LOL !!

my 1600 capri GT snapped its cambelt 3 times during the years i owned it(cos it leaked oil like a sieve!!), never bent a valve once ;)

at least it was a nice easy job, done it at the side of the road in about 15 mins flat!!! :D

Just remembered the photos I took when Andy Duff did mine:

They might not be there for long as I'm moving servers soon.

It's not too difficult a DIY job, but I would say only attempt it if you have at least a degree of experience working on cars, we has a stubbon bolt and it was only through previous experience that we knew the different ways of tackeling it.
