Has anybody had a go against one of these? My brothers mate reckons his 220 is going to keep up with the bro's RX7 TT, I cant see this somehow but does anyone know any different?

I will agree with that, I never said they where slow.

Dont agree. The older rovers are driven by old people, but the turbo is not ;) I think you wll agree with that.

I dont agree, did any one take into account that the red line of a RX-7 is quite higher than the Rover.

Now who said rover or zed drivers were calm collected witty people who could spell and make meaningful contributions to the joy of life?

signed

Rover and Zed driver - 3 turbos for me!

Now how sad is this: I've had an MG Maestro Turbo (and 2 EFi) and a Rover 220 Turbo and a 300ZX TT.

I enjoyed the Rover Turbo (metallic BRG & cream leather) but didn't like the harsh stiff handling and Honda switchgear. TBH the plastic "wood" veneer and Rover grille made the whole thing look like a grandad car, They should have kept the original clean front end (and, come to that, stuck an MG badge on it :D ). But it was hugely competent car, v quick and great handling.

The MG had a huuuuuge grin factor. When the turbo kicked in in 3rd, it went like a bat out of hell. And it was red! The torque steer when you floored it in 1st and 2nd was grin-enducing and the handling was bloody good. IMHO almost as sticky in the twisties as the Rover but much more comfy. I could get in that car and drive all day and get out fresh as a daisy. With its full Tickford body it had a certain bulldog charm and it was a big grin (there's that word again) to blow away "proper" sports cars who thought it was flat-cap / braces / pipe time.

The Z is just a different class. I've had it longer than any other car I've ever owned. Would I get another one? No - I'm keeping this one!

Would I get another Rover? No. But I enjoyed having one.

Would I get another MG Maestro? Actually, yes. But then I am a tad warped!

Cheers - Gio

I've had very quick FWD and RWD cars (205Gti with 2.3 16v engine, works grp A running gear / diff & ZX)

There's no comparison for driving enjoyment, which is what it's all about at the end of the day. If you race competitively then fair enough, otherwise does it matter if one is 2s quicker around the track if it's a crap drive.

Yeah, my 205 would take the Z apart on the track, but on the road it was a nighmare, all torque steer and wheelspin and honestly felt like it was trying to kill you half the time. FWD with big power / torque is just useless really.

The Z on the other had makes me grin every time I take it out, so I'll stick with that.

It's horses for courses really.

I don't care if someone had a Rover that could fookin time travel..............I HATE Rover's...........any Rover.

Just my own personal opinion. If you like 'em then thats cool. :D

You definatly know what your talking about ;) The only people that seem to diss them are people who have never had first-hand experience of them. Unfortunatly word of mouth never did the car's any favour's, but i enjoy every minute of driving my mine too. I drove it 30k miles last year, was my everyday car, then i run it at Santa Pod a couple of times and did a 14.5 @ 95mph (2.36 60ft) and then would drive home quite happily at 70mph like nothing had ever happened. Not to be under-estimated :D

All i got to say is

If I ever find the low-life who nicked mine G 990 ATF ......

Still driving yours MGTurbo? Look after it, not many left.

I've still got it, but off the road for the winter, icey roads and turbo's do not mix. Drove it all last winter so it's having a break from it now, will give me a chance to put a fresh HG on it and up the boost for next year. I've had it 3 and a half years and rebuilt it from scratch, i'll continue to look after it, there's less than 200 left now..

Not many posts from the Rover drivers today, I guess they're either back at school or given Grandad their car back.

What a load of old shite.

The my dad's bigger than your dad debate really is pathetic.

The Rover is a really rare car, agreed, most have rusted into the ground by now, they're quick, agreed - I put that down to the tinworm improving the power to weight ratio, and the removal of their driver's brains, that's why they all have to wear back-to-front baseball caps, it hides the scars. ;)

Tim

When I was looking at cars to buy 3 years ago, I looked at the Rover Turbo and I found a place where I asked a few questions, mainly on engines needing rebulids at 80,000 miles. I was expecting replies saying its not true or it depends.

I didnt get 1 reply trying to deny it. Most of them where excuses.

Hmm, very interesting theory there?

I think it's more to do with the rover drivers not wearing these big meddalions and chest wigs like you guys, surely these slow cars down.

No.

We dont need chest wigs. We are old enough to have real hair growing on our chest and face
