idle problem

Hi guy's, just purchased my first ever 'Z' '91 J UK TT manual with leather, covered a lot of miles though but with a fsh from nissan, what a car drives brilliantly. I just noticed that the water pump is buggered, not leaking just a lot of play in the shaft, so may as well do the timing belt while I'm here. Also the idle sometimes when I come to a stop stays at about 1500rpm and wont drop back down. So switch off, restart and all is well again???????

any idea's would be greatly apprieciated.

P.s my nissan dealer told me there is no gasket for the water pump or inlet/outlet pipes is this true???????

jonny - welcome..

there is a gasket for the water pump, not many people seem to know about it though.. check out Courtesy Nissan's 60k maint kit (http://www.courtesyparts.com) - it has the gasket listed & pictured

As for the idle - check the throttle position sensor, and the idle air corrector solenoid (have a look at twinturbo.net for docs on these)

Welcome Jonny! This is gonna get confusing I can see it coming...Johnny & Jonny...LOL!

You haven't got ginger hair have you by any chance???

Fast idle??? Could be your throttle bodies want cleaning out and then reset your ECU by disconnecting your battery for 30 mins. plus.

Check out TwinTurbo.net, get a login and then goto the FAQ or tech forum...fantastic site with tons of helpful info.

Keep an eye here though, sure you'll get some excellent responses...good lot on here!
