Hi to all. I have just picked up my zx, jap import - auto (non turbo) and was pleased to find this site. I have read quite a few posts to try and clarify if my experience is as it should be. When i really open it up it vibrates badly through 4/5000 rpm (which i feel through the gear stick) and also when kick down at higher speeds (90mph). It seems to wander slightly when throttled hard as if you have to correct the steering and my oil pressure reads about one. Please tell me i have not got i pile of crap and these can be rectified myself or cheap. A number of electrical irregularities but now i know where to find the fuse box i am happy.

on the positive - what an amazing car for the money with great shape. Hope someone can advice and i look forward to taking part.

Ps - is there much BHP/performance difference between the turbo/non turbo

propshaft vibration seems to be crop up a lot with vibration, usually centre bearing wears out,

oil pressure guages are notoriously inaccuate apparently, mines all over the place, so long as its changed regularly appx 3000 miles, with good oil should be ok, check for leaks smokey zorsts,

stock non turb is appx 220 bhp stock turbo is 300 bhp uk 280 imports,

There is about 80 bhp difference between the NA and TT and probably over a second off 0-60.

Hope you like your car.

When you say you open it up and it vibrates about 4-5000rpm, is that in every gear?

If so could be engine mounts or gearbox mounts are worn. If so, it nothing really that will blow your engine, just anoy the hell out of you.

However, if it is speed related it could be your balancing is out, or the centre bearing on your prof shaft has gone. You may as well get the balance checked on your wheels as it will only cost you a few quid. Do the same with your tracking, as that may be causing the wandering.

If its your propshaft, the bearing cost about £100 and should be OK for you to do it.

If its the balancing, £20 should do all 4 wheels.

Tracking at a good place will be £25.

Engine mounts ar quite cheap to buy but expensive to put in.

The Oil pressure is a common thing. The pressure sender unit often stops working. They are over 10 years old now so they have the right to stop working ;) Its £80 for a new sender from Nissan or most people get an after market gauge for £50 or so, which end up being more accurate and the senders for them are £6 when they need replacing.

We often have meetins Dave, and when one is near you, turn up and I am sure some one will be happy enough to show off their TT and take you for a spin in it to show the power difference. But trust me, you will want one after ;) Where do you live?

Thanks for all the great advice. I live in leicester and would be interested to attend one of the meets. The more i drive my zx the more it seems to grow on me. The engine seems very quiet (especially when standing) but seems "gratey" above 3/4000 rpm - this is the same vibration (although not as bad) when i drive and throttle hard. Sorry for the constant questions i am still unsure what to expect from the drive - should it be very quiet and feel smooth at all times. At higher speeds 90-100mph it just seems to rev more and more as if it is trying to change gear (is this normal).

Any way thats enough for now. Once again - your replies are very much appreciated.

sell it son and get a twin turbo you wont believe how fast they are:D

Hi bigdave,

I am also in leicester and have a TT if you fancy a go to see what the difference is let me know.

Midlands zedders on the increase!!!:D

We all help eachother out on here Bigdave, so if you get any cheap pot noodles you'll have to give us all a shout!!!;)

Welcome to the madhouse!!

Hi big dave,

I've got a non turbo Auto like yours, at 90-100mph, it should be nicely settled and locked up in top gear, revs should be constant at about 3800 if memory serves, (don't often get to go 100mph around here due to hitlers little helpers sat in their transit vans!!)

Not sure what you mean by it reving more and more at high speed, Should only change rev's if you kick down and it drops into 3rd at which time it should pull well to redline and change back to top at about 110ish.

Could be your torque converter isn't locking up once in top gear.

Look up Autobox diagnostics at AndyP's site, 300zx.org.uk and run one if I were you, also check Trans oil level, and change oil as soon as poss (twice if your not flushing it) again look up procedure in above site for how to.

You really want to fit a better auto box oil cooler as well, as the standard one is particularly shite on the N/A (non turbo) and you could cook the box at high speed especially if you have degraded fluid.

Is yours derestricted yet??, remember if you remove the speed limiter, the car will be going beyond what it's ever been before since new!! so best to get all service issues dealt with before rodding it too much!!

Also, you need to change the cam belt, if not done already. Whats your mileage??

You can now look forward to a long and happy love & hate relationship with the car, and please surrender your wallet at the door.....LOL

Enjoy driving one of the most exotic cars about!!

Paul N:D :D

Thanks for the response guys. The offer is much appreciated Rich although i now deep down i would love the tt and the increased power that goes hand in hand. In the few days of having the zed i have already spent cash to improve (having 2 rear sections of exhaust made, cat 1 alarm, wheels balanced and tracked). It would not be good to crave change so early on (have 4 kiddies to think of other than my toy). Something (amongst so much else) is this import restricted - i wandered why my clock only went to about 115mph - how do i remove the restricter - can i do it or do i replace the clocks - does anyone have any to sell if thats the case - please advise (seems never ending). I Read lots of posts on the power button - mine seems to interfere in some way. Some times i set off and it is quick other times it seems like it is in hold mode. Seems fine if i leave it and restart after a few mins - but annoying that not consistent.

Any ideas.

Cheers

Dave

Dave,

Again symtoms sound like your autobox is not as it should be, have you checked the oil level and condition yet??

Hi Paul,

Checked this alrady - both engine oil and gearbox oil is very clear (as if just changed)-levels are as they should be. The car, i was told has done 55,000 miles - under bonnet is spookily clean. The garage i got it from had other zed's but everything on this one was far better condition - underside, leather interior etc so i know that did not attempt to clean around the engine bay and would put money on it they did not service it. I have seen her undersdide up on ramps and apart from the rear exhaust sections eaxh side she is really clean - no signs of oil spillage/leakage at all

Any thought on the limiter.

Cheers

Dave
