Just trying to decide which bumper I want to upgrade to and have been wondering about the aerodynamics , for you technical bods out there at what sort of speed will the front bumper come in to play ??

I know the standard bumper is aerodynamic but lets bugger all air in to the rad etc , where as some of the others must be like driving with a brick in front of your car and therfore not aerodynamic at all.

Thought's as always appreciated

Which performance ? Cooling ? Speed ? Downforce ? Straight line stability ? They're all performance factors affected by aerodynamics and you can't improve one without screwing up another. With the exception of cooling, it's all irrelevant for road driving unless you get really silly.

Hi Ryan,

your alc it's on it's way i'll send you the tracking num tomorrow.Go for the Greddy it's pretty expensive but easy to repair.Even if you sliced it into 2 just get it to a fiberglass guy and will glue it, then just paint.I broke mine a lot of times. Only when a part of it brakes and you loose it you'll have a prob.I'm sending you some pics to your e-mail :)

Thanks

the paint wont crack if its done properly? You saying Nissan didnt do it properly, cos my dad hit a bollard with the stock front and the paint cracked on that, also the bumper didnt flex back to normal, there is a small dent in it.

I knew it! :D  :D

Nissan's paint is fine the prob is their undercoat it's not good that's y paint gets off especially in the rear bumper where there is the heat from the ex

There is also a difference in the paint type used to paint the steel body work and the polyurethane bumpers - or at least if done properly there should be a difference ...

Clarkey - guess your car's bumper bent back too far and probably stretched the bumper too far or even "folded". Both of which will prevent it from returning to the original shape.

Here's a thought:- what ever happened to developments of so called "memory metal"? You could bend it completely out of shape, apply a little heat or electrical current and the thing pops back to it's original shape. That would be the solution to all our bumper woes!

Regards,

stock bumper is probably a compromise between looks and aerodynamics. Aftermarket bumpers are probably mainly about looks, but may be better or worse aerodynamically - truth is prolly no-one on this forum knows either way, without using guesswork/judgement, which is hard when aerodynamics are the topic.

And that wud b a bad thing ?? ;)

UMMM No that is butt ugly but thanks for the tought

a performance engine needs more air, which necessitates a larger air intake - this will increase drag. But the benefit of more air will give more than the increased drag will take away. A car is a collection of compromises and many factor are interrelated in optimising the car.
