Hi guys and guls

I have been experiencing irregular ideling on my Z.

I have first experienced this when i was driving back from Southampton, when the car got to normal working temperature and i stop at trafic lights the revs drop to below 500 rpm or almost stalls and then jumps up to 1200 then down to normal, but when i stand at a red travic light for a long time the revs will drop to 500 rpm and then up to 1500 rpm continuesly untill i pull away the car misfires for a few seconds then go like hell.

Could it be a leak on the intake manifold or is it more serious than that or simplier.

Have anyone got some advice.

Exuse my spelling i'm a dodgy South African

the base idle is set too low, there is a screw at the back of the plenum near the battery, adjust this (people say to disconnect it and do it with the engine running but the plug is a PITA to get off, so I just shut the engine off and adjusted it, worked fine for me). This will stop the revs from dropping below a desired rpm (about 550rpm here). It shouldnt go up to 1500rpm, maybe reset the ECU and see if it stops. Somebody else might be able to offer an explanation though.

How do i reset the ecu do i just disconect the batery for a couple of minutes:confused:

I'm all new to the zed i know awol about them

Disconnect the battery for at least an hour and that will reset it.

cheers i'll do that :)

ive had this, clean the throttle position switch conector.

where about will this connector be

little black box on the RHS throttle body (looking from the front) about the size of a match box, iirc theres a plug on the front and a plug on trailing leads.

I had a similar problem some time back, revs all over the place, hesitant on pull off, only some times, could feel the revs going up and down during driving (slightly faster, then sometimes slower feel to the speed!)

Turns out it was the temp sensor just needed a clean as it had become green and fluffy (not good!) and this makes a really bad contact so the engine would get confused at what temp the engine was, higher revs due to it thinking it was cold, then normal revs as it made a connection to say it was warm enough, and so and so on........

Worth a check and clean.

yes deffinatly, anyone here will tell you that a dodgy temp sensor will make the car run really rough.

Happened to ours and had exactly the same symptoms as Matty.

I had identical problems to yours and mine turned out to be the temp sensor too! Cleaned away the verdigris from the terminals and it worked great!
