noisy manual gearbox

Hi me again,

My toy is making a whining noise from the gearbox!

Its not that loud but is annoying, it stops when I press the clutch in but is there the rest of the time.

Is it a box problem or a clutch problem and how can I cure it!

Before anyone says it I've already tried turning the music up but it doesnt go away it just hides.

Also when I bought the car the guy said he had fitted a new clutch 1000 miles ago but when I floor it instead of the wheels spinning its the clutch that spins is this normal and do I need a stronger spinged clutch to overcome this.

Its a bit of a pain when trying to get a good time at Crail raceway.

Best time so far for standing quarter is 14.3secs though.

will do better when I get my NOS sorted out hopefully for next meet on 9th Nov.

Sounds like the clutch release bearings or something but it could be the box I suppose.

thanks I will have to get it checked out.

Where is the AIV sensor as I have a mod for it to add BHP but cant ID which connection it is.

Ive got a red leather look interior coming how easy is it to strip out the interior to fit it?

Do you know where I can get leather look seat covers for my Z

Love the suspension on your movie;)

My gearbox whinned like a thing that whines a lot until I had it stripped down.

I was told that the bearings were completely shot and quoted £1200 for a rebuild. I went for a replacement second hand box instead, which was just £600 plus fitting of course! The replacement box is really lumpy in 1st and 2nd until it's seriously warmed up (not a problem with the old box!)

Gearbox whining now gone - now it's just me that keeps whining on about the cost of F**KIN gearboxes!

And Chris - where do you get these video Titbits?

(if I can call them that!!!):D

Mine whines too, hmm funny how it stops when the mrs gets out.:D :slap: ;)

Shiloh - not sure if its of interest, but I'm replacing my front seats and retrimming the lot in a few weeks time. The seats are all in black leather which you can have for a small fee :D!?!?

Not sure what's involved, but if you wanted to swap the seats out to avoid having to retrim its worth considering.

Whiney manuals!!!!

Should have got an auto!!!;)

(shrimpo made me say it!!!)

Of course I would be interested.

What kind of SMALL fee are we talking about then?

And where in the country are you. I'm in Fife,Scotland:D

Ha ha,

I'd sooner have a manual gearbox that screams (or even sings RAP MUSIC!!!!) before I'd settle for an Auto!

Sometimes I think we need TWO forums here - one for those who are driving enthusiasts and another for the owners of AUTOMATIC Zeds!

Hi shiloh

If the gearbox whine is most in 1st and 2nd and least in 4th and 5th then its probably a slightly worn input/lay shaft bearing.

Jon

if it is the lay shaft bearing then how long will it last approx and will running standing quarters in it deteriorate it quicker?

Running standing quarters will deteriorate EVERYTHING quicker!!!

ok im guess you havent had the car long and it hasnt just suddenly out of the blue started this whining..

i also bought a ZX few months ago and the gearbox whined too and i was informed that all Zed gearboxes whine..what my problem was infact was the rubber boot that surrounds the gearshift was not in place..so i took the console part and refitted it and now it is quiet as a mouse!

hope this helps

With normal driving it should last indefinitelly. Quarter mile sprints.........who knows!

Btw 14.3 with a dodgey clutch is pretty impressive!

Thanks for all the help and advice its been really helpful!

Got a new clutch coming soon so I will check everything over while the gearbox is out.

Might even improve my times too.:D
