My home pc had a floppy disc when supplied but have never used it, but now need to open a couple of disc`s and it does not work.

Although it appears in the device manager and has a windows driver asigned to it ..nothing? if I try to open a disc it comes up no valid media, I have tried several disc`s and all the same, one thing I have noticed at boot up the floppy does not operate, I am aware (think) this can be opted for in the BIOS settings is it likely something needs altering here?.

So my question where do I go from here to resolve this?

Hi Jeff

Does the floppy light come on at all when you try to access the disk from Windows? If it does then the drive may be incorrectly configured. Try deleting the drive from device manager then restarting your PC - it should then redetect and reinstall the driver.

If you need to check your BIOS settings give me a buzz..

It's probably your jumper settings on the drive itself.

If you have installed a CD drive or the likes since you had the PC, then check the device manager to see if there are any conflicts, you probably have one or more set to Master when it should be set to slave.

Floppy drives don't have jumpers - it will run off the FDD controller NOT the IDE controller... :slap:

Check inside the PC - that the power cable is plugged into it and that the mainribbon cable is also plugged into the back of it and the motherboard - maybe something simple. Failing that the Floopy disk drive maybe goosed - only a few quid to buy another from somewhere like pc world.

Jeff...

Check the power light at boot up and when you try to read a disc... If no joy, check all cables to and from the back of the floppy disc drive... As stated above you can get them from PC World for under £2.

P.S. Any info on that spoiler?

Hi,

Also if the floppy disk drive light comes on and stays on after boot-up - this means you have floppy disk drive cable plugged in wrong - connector upside down!

it can be disabled in the bios so check there too
