Can anyone tell me if a twin turbo manual box is different to a non turbo manual box. If so, what are the differences.

Thanks in advance

I believe this was brought up a while ago,

I think the ratios are slightly different and I have personally heard that the TT box is made of a stronger metal, I can't back that up though but it may be worth checking it out :)

That rings true with what I thought. So it sounds like a N/A box could be put in a TT car then. Anyone else know ??

Thanks

Hi Andy,

The ratios are exactly the same, there is a rumour that the shafts are hardened but nothing confirmed and many people in the states have done this with no problems:D

Hi all, can answer this in some detail, having struggled my backside off for 2 hours once trying to fit an N/A box to a twin turbo!

The ratio`s are the same the shafts are the same but the flywheels are NOT! n/a uses a smaller flywheel and clutch unit and the bell housing casting on the N/A gearbox has been altered to suit this by been slightly thicker which reduces the internal size of the bell housing just too much for it to clear the larger flywheel normally fitted on a twin, even if it did fit the starter motor will not engage correctly on the ring gear as the casting wher the starter fits is slimmer in order for the starter motor to reach the n/a`s smaller flywheel.

It would be possible to fit but an n/a flywheel and clutch would need to be used , of course this would not be a good idea as the clutch has a hard life as it is in a twin.

Hope that helps.

Erm...Ben's car is living proof that an NA box can be grafted into a TT. Ben has TT flywheel and an uprated TT clutch I believe. I think he had to grind something down a very small amount on the bell housing. Having said that, he does have some starter motor/ring gear probs, supposedly due to a broken bolt on the starter housing though if memory serves...

Cheers!

aye.....My motor's running fine with a N/A box on it. I believe the internals are exactly the same but bellhousing is slighty different where the starter mounts.

When originally trying to fit my g/box the bellhousing touched the ring gear ever so slightly. To sort this i got the angle grinder out and shaved around 5mm off that part of the bellhousing and then mounted the starter with 2mm washers. Works a treat!

My starter issues were with some muppet stripping the thread out of the lower bolt hole and me being to lazy to re-thread. :)

Mmmm.... grinding down a very small amount on the bell housing

that`s ingenious but not something I would like to do for a customer, one of those things where it is ok for your own car but not someone elses.
