Just drain it and fill up with straight anti -freeze or fanny about every year with the density float tool thingy?

What?

I had to put anti freeze in my car again when I did the Thermostat. I put about 3.5 litres in and then the rest with water. I dont think you have to be deadly accurate. Get a 4 litre bottle and leave about a pint in the bottom. :D

What is the reccomended amount of Anti Freeze needed?

Stuart

Straight antifreeze??

I think you need a 50/50 mix with water for this time of year i think.

If your draining, so save draining the cylinder banks (which I cant find) you can remove top rad hose and bottom hose (with bowl under it) then blow down the top hose that goes into the engine, this should get most of the old water out.

When you top up be careful not to get air locks.

You've both answered my question to a certain extent.

More anti-frrrreeze more cold weather protection (wont frrreeze) so what I was thinking is just use straight anti-freeze, it dosen't cost that much, and you can forget about it, don't have to buy stupid gauges from harry's to measure the anti-freeze ratio!

50/50 mix is more than enough for this country, higher mixes can actually be detrimental & is not recommended.

most manufacturers recommend renewing the coolant every 3 years, to ensure that the anti corrosion properties are maintained more than anything

Why not buy the ready mixed stuff straight from a Mandela.

It's no more expensive than leading brands and after all it's the recomended choice of Mr Nissan:D

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Ah!

Any idea why it's detrimental!.

i can only think that this is because it is thicker, therfore placing more strain on water pump bearings and such like.. ask adamr for his view, he was advised to run 100% antifreeze in his car, personally i wouldnt.

The reason why it is detrimental, is that it takes more thermal energy to heat water to the same temperature than antifreeze, so it better at cooling your engine! Antifreeze has other qualities like reducing the surface tension of water so that boiling vapour bubbles can reenter the water and exit at suitable trap point and antifreeze hightens the temperature at which water boils which is also desirable!

Somewhere between a 30-50% dose of antifreeze is suitable depending on the temp of where you live!

1 part antifreeze to 2 parts water is sufficient for about -17degreesc

plenty for this country

Why is it? From what I hear more is better, as it helps to keep your engine cool during the summer.

But I do know that after a few years, the anti freeze/coolant actually makes things worse as deteriorates.

I have flushed my radiator out 3 times in the 2.5 year I have had my car. Last time I would say the mixture is about 75/25 and my car has only reached 80ºC once and it came down in less than 30 seconds.

see Mark's post!! ;)

also, neat Antifreeze crysalizes as it freezes & can actually freeze at a higher temp than a 50/50 mix

I changed mine at the weekend, Just put a two litre bottle in and the rest water, In my opinion thats plenty. How the F**k could anything freeze under a Z's Hood anyway!!!! LOL

Changed mine at the w/end with 1.5L anti freeze to the rest of the rad think thats enough?

Arthur

Went to Torquay over w/end only saw a red Z near Stonehenge

Didnt aknowledge me though!
