I live just off 09L/27R (north runway) at Heathrow and so most mornings, when I'm working at home, get a small lump in the throat as 4 Rolls Royce Olympus engines on full afterburner kick out a grand total of 152,000* lbs of thrust tearing the sky apart and launching 203ft 9ins of pure white beauty into flight.

 

And I just heard the last ever passenger flight from LHR take off to Edinburgh.

 

B*stards. If any of you out there have got an outstanding order with Airbus Industrie, please cancel it in protest.

 

No longer can anyone simply buy a ticket to fly supersonic. An experience now lost to us mere civilians.

Cos it would destroy their image as 'Britains airline', which they achieved when the industry was nationalised and after various rigmoroles and lots of public money and a privatisation of the airline industry they are still clininging to some idea that they are 'the' national airline company. Be really nice flying on a 'Virgin Concorde' knowing that it was initially funded by the Sex Pistols.

We still do, it's a bit like formula 1 - all the real work is either done in the uk of abroad, but lead by UK engineers.

It seems all the powers that be today want to trash anything that smacks of a Great British achievement - PC gone too far if you ask me.

 

Concord is still the greatest advance in passenger flight despite being a year older than me! I hate to think that the Americans are having the last laugh today, just because they haven't (or cannot) produce anything better in 34 years and with all the finance available to them.

 

I also agree Richard Branson should have been allowed to take it over. He has the finance and resources to sort any safety issues and make a go of it.

 

Perhaps it's better he doesn't though because the Government and BA would make sure he look a fool, like Railtrack have done with the railways. Virgin trains are fine and advanced compared to others but the infrastructure still ensures they can't run to their full potential, thus making Virgin look bad instead of showing up the competition as they should.

Great photos Gio and well said Richard - there has been talk of a Boeing SST for years, but nothing has ever materialised.

WE done it years ago, the Russians copied (and failed!). It's an amazing feat of engineering and creativity and one which should be kept alive IMHO.

The rest if the world sat on their arses while we (and our French friends ;) ) led the world.

It's a sign of the times when our once great country is sinking into obscurity; only to be represented by yobbos, scroungers and scumbags :mad:
