Hey guys, hope you can help me out here. I have a 300zx Twin Turbo which has a leak underneath where the tanny and motor/crankshaft meet. Now i am more than certain that it is my main seal that is causing the leak. But one question i have to ask is whether i can use the "ADDITIVE" to perhaps expand the rubber seal which can possibly stop the leaking. Please let me know whether that is advisable to use or not because replacing the seal is costing me an arm and a leg and possibly my nuts aswell depending on where i go to fix it. Thanks mates and cheers

There is a big question mark over additives. Are you talking about Oil one? I have not heard of any oil additive which stops oil leaks. If there are it must run a risk of blocking other parts of the engine.

Changing the seal shouldnt be that espensive. The seal should only cost £20 which is about $40(CAN).

Is your car a manual? If so I would wait until you need to change your clutch, as you have to take everything off to change the seal as you need to change the clutch.

Unless the leak is really bad, I would just live with it until you need the clutch change, presuming it's a manual. Mine leaked and just as I was about to pay to get it changed, the clutch went. If I had the leack fixed a week earlier. I would have paid £125 to change the seal and then another £125 to change the clutch involved the same work.

P.S. Not trying to turn you away from this lovely UK 300ZX forum :D but

http://www.twinturbo.net

http://www.300zxclub.com

are more America/South America/Canada people and I am sure there will be people on there who could point you to a good mechanic who could do the work cheaper.

The 300zxclub site has a small Canada section where I am sure some one will be able to help you more there.

I will leave you with some wise words from the mechanic who works on my car.

"If the main seal is leaking slightly, the underneath of your car will never get rusty" ;)

Cos its got a slight coating of oil :D

Good luck

There are additives that can do this, and they do also affect every other seal in the engine, but as they only work on seals and not gaskets etc they can be OK.

The way they work is they make the rubber, (or whatever they are made of now) expand slightly and so can cure the leak.

Some people will say never use it, but I have, not in my Z though.

As far as I know they dont cause any trouble....IMHO

Personally after seeing the engine block of a TT at the weekend I wouldnt add anything of the sort, there are some tiny holes which if blocked by something like this would mean having a serious bill.

uprate your clutch and replace the seal ;) thats what im doing to mine

...isn't there evidence that blocked or partially blocked PCV? valves blows oil out of the main seal? Could this be the reason / cure route?

good luck

Really? I never knew that plugged pcv valves cause leaks in the main seal? Well i'm planning on changing the PCV valves and hopefully that will resolve the solution. Well thanks alot for all the info i really appreciate it and i'll probably change the clutch if ever i need to replace the seal. Do you think that i should bring the car to a place where they specialise in 300zx's or should it be ok to bring it to a garage where they can perhaps do it with out any difficulties???
