Jeff - is that the pukka MS Win98 boot disc with all the CD drivers on? If yes then;

Boot from the floppy, say to run with CD support but no Setup (I forget the option number now..). When it boots up you'll be at an A: prompt. Check you can access your CD drive (should be the usual drive letter - D: or whatever) and see what's on there. If you can't, get help smile.gif If you can, great.. Carry on.

Is the CD you have the full version? (I.e. not an upgrade?) If yes then;

Go to C:

CD to \Windows\Command

And (if you are really sure you don't want anything that is on your machine)

Do "FORMAT C:"

Wait a while....

Now reboot with the floppy in, and choose CD Rom support & Setup from CD (or similar text.. It'll be obvious which one you want)..

And follow the bouncing ball smile.gif

Oh yeah and here's something I forgot;

Before you do;

Write down all your ISP/dial up settings somewhere safe - and make sure you can remember the password (easy to forget if you have Windows remember the password for you!).

Make sure you know the name/make/model of your Graphics card, Sound card, and network card (if you have one). Better still, dig out the original discs.

Win98 *probably* comes with drivers for the cards built in, but what's on the discs might well be newer.

A good rule of thumb (I find) is to make sure you're using the right drivers for everything once you're installed, then go to the website for everything and download the latest drivers and switch to them.

Going to windowsupdate.microsoft.com Isn't a bad idea either to get the latest patches for 98 (of which there are quite a few!) for security and stability.

Anything else? smile.gif

Oh yeah it's Micro$oft, so don't forget to rub the lucky rabbits foot and throw a double six before you start !!!! wink.gif

On a slightly more serious note, can't you do a 95 --> 98 upgrade ? Not really an expert on this as I try not to touch anything before NT and it's really only W2K or XP (or Linux or VMS) for me ....

Yep you can do a 95 --> 98 upgrade..

Personally I'd avoid it like the plague.. Bits of old drivers, old inf files.. I've had all sorts of crap get left behind by 95 (OK we're talking several years ago now admittedly).. Zap it and start over - always good advice with M$ biggrin.gif

Personally, I'm a Win2K man - altho I have NT4 Server running on the other machine (coz I'm a sad get) and a Mandrake Linux dual boot on the laptop..

Tried ME for a bit, didn't like it.. Just personal preference I guess..

Have yet to get hold of XP to have a play with though..

Thanks guys well here goes will log off and start formatting..see you in the morning I hope. Jeff TT

Az,

Agree totally m8 wrt upgrade vs fresh install. But sometimes it's a lot easier to upgrade rather than get into the blank disc, can't boot anything situation. There is always that option after the upgrade has screwed up ..... Kind of depends whether you're an expert/arch fiddler or just a user wink.gif

What version on Win98 is it? Win98 R1 is just Win95 with a few bug fixes and new drivers, and was designed to install over Win95. Win98 R2 is different and is a Bootable CD. Just make sure you have the boot sequence CD ROM first in your Bios, and then the computer will do it all.

Stuart.

for anyone with a 95/format/98/no drivers/eek/situation

backup (if you can) the

c:\windows\inf

c:\windows\help

c:\windows\ini

folders onto a CDR (run with me on this one smile.gif )

call the whole thing 'drivers' if you like.

format the hard disk and reload 98

no drivers?

all on the cdr.

trust me it works.
