After been told by my local nissan dealer that the autobox sump gaskets are back ordered (from overseas) and will take 5 weeks to arrive (mine been an import has no drain plug) I was wondering if anyone has ever sucked the fluid out through the dipstick tube ?

Thanks

Wait til it cools down or you'll burn your mouth

Never heard of this, I personally doubt v much that it would work.

I will have to look at the workshop manual and see if the filler tube extends down into the reservoir..........

Hi John,

How've you been mate?

Contact Jeff TT (Trader Section - ZedWorld). He does quite a few gearbox fluid changes (outsourced) and would be able to answer your question.

John

From what I understand they normally dont have a drain plug, although a couple of people here seem to have drain plugs on their imports.

John

I thought the TT's had a drain plug and the N/A's didnt....might be wrong though.

John,

You could slide down a suitable size plastic tube and suck out the fluid as the dipstick tube goes to the bottom of the sump. However I wouldn't recommend it!!

Earlier models had no drain plug, later ones did, although in any case, you should remov the sump, to clean it out along with the strainer and magnet.

When you refill, run it for about 50 miles, then drain and refill again!!! this is the only way to get the oil anything like clean, as about 50% stays in the torque convertor when draining!! unless you have it pressure flushed.

There is a good write up about what to do here:

So don't forget to order 2 gaskets if you don't have a sump plug!!

Thanks Paul,

I only ordered one gasket.......they are over £20 each.

What I could do is not to overtighten the bolts, run it for a few miles only to get the oil blended, they remove and refit the pan with the correct torque.

I wonder, do people with the turbo just drain it and not clean the strainer and magnet ?

John

I suppose you don't have to bother, but with he amount of iron filings on my magnet, and layer of grey sludge coating my sump pan and strainer, I'm glad I did!!

Paul N

Id have to agree, changed mine this weekend and was shocked at the amount of grey sludge and crap on my magnet aswell.

Im doing mine again next weekend because only managed to remove 4 out of the 8.7 litres of ATF.

Do you reckon it will be safe to re-use the one week old gasket again ? I would have thought so, in 1 week it wont have got brittle or stayed in a compressed state.

Thanks

John

yes mate, I would have thought it would be ok, the material their made out of is not the conventional paper gasket stuff, it feels slightly rubbery to me.
