Buying an Overboost Chip

Hi,

Does anyone have any recommendations for the best place to get an overboost chip for my ZX, so afr the cheapest I can find one is £95.00 plus VAT from Torque developments.

Will it be possibe for me to fit this myself?

Thanks,

Justin

Are you used to working with electronic components?

Are you a good solderer/desolderer?

I have done minor electrical things but nothing major. Used to solder things alot in the days when I used to be into Radio Controlled cars, hardly the same I know but its something!

What's an overboost chip? Do you need one on a Z?

The chip in the ecu needs to be unsoldered and then

a socket soldered in.

The chip sellers are usually keen to do the whole

job so that they know that it's done right.

Could be an expensive experiment to do it y'self!

Not been infected with chip bug yet.....

Hi Dave, apparently so, but only if you wanna play about with the boost on your turbo's.

I just wanna know how much they cost, gotta keep an eye on my spending when it comes to cars!

Cheers Simmo.

I think I might leave it to the experts. I take it that they won't charge much to fit it then? How much did you pay for yours and how much did it cost ya if you don't mind me asking?

Justin

Not gone down that route......yet.

Reading posts here looks like you should call SE Nissan

and/or Zedworld.

Have you changed the induction first?

De-catted?

Bear in mind the age and mileage of your car.

Justin,

There's some confusion here. Simmo is talking about replacing the chip in the ECU. You appear to be talking about adding a Fuel Cut Defencer, which TDI call an overboost chip.

To the best of my knowledge a 300ZX doesn't need an FCD (even though TDI have one in their 300ZX section).

However, an upgraded ECU is a good idea if you're going to increase the boost.

Everyone seems to be talking about a chip that you solder into the ecu which anables you to up the boost with an electronic or manual controller.

Does this seem about right?

Thanks

Justin

Pretty much. There's a chip in the ECU that controls the fueling. By default the fuel maps aren't broad enough to properly cover the requirements of running higher boost (i.e. there is extra air going in and the chip doesn't know how much fuel to provide), so people replace the chip with one that has better, broader maps to make running higher boost safe®.

As for the FCD, the less said about TDI the better as they've threatened this site with legal action before. Suffice to say that I'd save my money...

Thanks Dave,

I think TDI are expensive anyway. Do you know how much this chip I need is, also a link to a site I can buy one from?

Justin:)

The major ones are the JWT and the SE chips. The SE is apparently more aggressive and is designed for UK cars (called Nisstek now I think). The JWT is developed in the states by the company Nissan used to develop chips for their race cars (http://www.jimwolftechnology.com).

Take your pick. The best idea is to have a search as there has been a lot of talk about the relative merits of the 2 chips and there are various places to buy them...
