There's another thread going on this, search back a couple of days...

Basically:

Power differences neither here nor there once you've modded.

5k should get you a goody. I spent my 5k on buying a modded car - got lots of kit for my money - but now I think I'd spend it on buying a minter.

Imports actually in the majority in this club (I think) but more expensive to insure. Get classic insurance if you have a daily driver as well - way cheaper.

Look on AndyP's site 300zx.org.uk for the links to buyer's guides. Read ALL of them. Twice!

There's several in Auto Trader this week, unusually...

Steve,

My suggestion is that you go out and buy the best unmodified car you can get (UK/J-spec makes no difference except at insurance time). Nine times out of ten you'll find that modified ones have been thrashed and are far more expensive to insure (holds true for both UK and J-spec models). Not saying you won't find a well looked after modified one but with cars of this calibre and age it pays to buy a well running stock one. Then spend some money on making sure it runs absolutely spot on (i.e., get your cambelt and auxilary belts changed, have a service done, etc) and then slowly add the upgrades (keeping in mind that you must declare these to your insurance company as non-disclosure may invalidate your policy).

Two years ago I went out and searched for well over 6 months for a good stock Zed. Seen and tried out many different ones and about 15 Zeds later decided to buy the one I have now. Don't let your heart and emotions rule your purchase and shop around. These cars are awesome and in the long run you will appreciate not buying the first one you see/try.

Apologies if this sounds a bit like a lecture - was not so intended. Hope you find a good one mate!

Regards,

I have a well running stock UK one, but it's an auto. White, TT. Plenty of oil changes and rarely boot it and it hasn't let me down once since I bought it 2 years ago. Engine sounds sweet.

In a sentence UK ones have a bigger radiator and even an oil cooler on the diff for continuous high speed running plus more likely to have leather whereas imports likely to be rust free with some add on goodies included.
