Hi guys and girls,

Bit down right now as I've had it confirmed the squeal I was hearing in my engine is a dying turbo. Money very tight at the moment, so perhaps I could seek some further advice from you good people.

Should turbos be replaced as pairs, and if not do they have to be matched anyway? Obviously they will need to be of similar size and output boost, but will they need to be of identical make?

Also what financial damage am I looking at for this?

Simon :(

I've seen figures of £1k to have both replaced.

If it was me then yes change them in pairs. Maybe as a cheap option a pair off the same car in exchange for your good one and damaged for recon. Who would do this I don't know but I'd be looking for someone that did.

Failing that you could sell the car and get some really nice updated ones for say £2500. But sadly you'd have no car to but them on.

I've seen some nice ornament made from car part though. Ashtrays Tables etc..

Then buy a push bike....cheaper!

My atempt to cheer you up! I know I'd be gutted at the prospect of needing new turbos.

Anyway must be quite as my 300zx man TT is in the garage and she may hear me, having time belt etc etc...time belt £350 but its the etc etc that is costing!!!!

Good luck mate, sure someone will be able to sort you out. Do a search to see if anyone breaking a tt on the forum, get your spanners out, job done??

Hello Simon,

My turbos are going for the second time so basically you change them both as your mechanic will probably pull the engine to do the job. It's not worth replacing one then finding you need to pull the engine a year later to do the other one. Labour wise you're looking at between 6 and 8 hundred. I'ts then up to you how much you want to spend on the turbos.

I've just found a pair on ebay in America. Seconds at least, off a Jap import (as mine) that's done 44*** kms. Current price including ancillaries $500 = £300 approx.

Should I buy? I have just over two hours to decide.

If anyone has done this before, what is the import charge like? I've been advised about £50 for delivery.

Simon.

Simon,

I would never personally put on second hand turbos. You don't know the full history of them and if they smoke or fail in 6 months time you have to pay the labour charge of pulling the engine again. I personally don't believe it's worth cutting corners if you intend on keeping the car.

:( sorry to hear of your woes mate, hard choice, personaly i would go with new/uprated turbo's as engine has to come out ,if you put in secondhand ones then you may be ok, but a few months down the line they may go to,50-50 chance that you will have to take, there are some places that can i believe change the turbo's without pulling engine but would not know if this would save you any money, might do if you getting second hand ones, then if they last a year or so will give you time to save for big tubs;)
